Be warned: this contains spoilers for the sixth episode of Chicago Fire Season 14, titled “Broken Things.” You can watch it the day after it airs with a Peacock subscription.
The firefighters of Chicago Fire’s Firehouse 51 have faced tough challenges, but now they’re saying goodbye to one of their own as the current TV season ends. Stella Kidd is leaving Firehouse 51 and Chicago, which might remind some fans of a similar departure in Season 10. However, this time the reason for her leaving is positive, and she is expected to return as scheduled.
Stella dedicated her day to finding better care for Isaiah’s mother, while Severide spent time learning from Pascal. She connected with Goodwin at Chicago Med and discovered an excellent facility that could meet Isaiah’s mother’s needs. The only problem was its location – it was in Cleveland, Ohio, several states and across one of the Great Lakes from Chicago.
As someone currently in Northeast Ohio, I enjoyed the mention of Cleveland and Stella’s funny reaction to hearing “Ohio.” Despite the location, she’s dedicated to helping Isaiah, so she and he are moving to Ohio for a few weeks to support his mother while Severide remains in Chicago.
This situation feels similar to when Stella left Firehouse 51 and Severide in Season 10 to work with Girls on Fire nationally. While that was a good cause, it caused problems because she didn’t respond to Severide’s attempts to reach her, and didn’t let him know when she was coming back. Eventually, she did return permanently, but their relationship went through a difficult period.
Okay, so Stella leaving again… it definitely echoes her storyline from last season, but trust me, this feels completely different. Back then, it felt like she was running from things. This time, it’s about supporting Isaiah and his journey, which is a really beautiful part of her growth as a mom. And honestly, her relationship with Severide? It’s stronger than ever. They’ve built something really solid, and that’s what makes this departure feel so much more… intentional, and less about them being fractured.
I’m really glad “Broken Things” aired when it did, just a week before the season finale! It means everyone’s going on break until 2026, but honestly, I’m not too worried about Stella heading to Cleveland to help Isaiah. It sounds like that might just cover the winter break, and she could be back quickly – maybe even at the start of the new year. I’m relieved it doesn’t seem like she’ll be gone for a long stretch this time!
The season finale, titled “Pierce the Vein,” promises to be dramatic even without Kidd involved. Her husband is investigating a fire at a high school, and Novak receives a surprising phone call – likely related to her sister, if the preview is anything to go by. Here’s a sneak peek:
Don’t miss the fall finale of Chicago Fire Season 14 on NBC Wednesday, November 12th at 9 p.m. Eastern. It’s part of a powerful night of Chicago dramas, airing between Season 11 of Chicago Med at 8 p.m. Eastern and Season 13 of Chicago P.D. at 10 p.m. Eastern. You can also watch all three shows on Peacock.
