In Episode 6 of “Butterfly,” the suspenseful conclusion unveiled the heart-wrenching demise of David Jung’s spouse, Eunju, leaving viewers puzzled about whether his daughter, Rebecca, could have been responsible for her murder. The Amazon Prime Video thriller unfolds the tale of ex-spy David, who has taken extraordinary measures to reconnect with Rebecca following her transformation into a malevolent secret agent for the corrupt organization known as Caddis. A mission in the Philippines took an unexpected turn, causing David to feign his own death to safeguard Rebecca. However, he failed to foresee that she would be seduced by darkness and ascend within the ranks of Caddis’ elite agents.
As Rebecca remained engrossed in her role as a tool for Caddis, David embarked on a fresh journey following his marriage to Eunju Kim and the birth of their daughter Minhee. However, it should be noted that Eunju’s family was not entirely noble, with her father being entangled in illicit activities due to his questionable import-export business. Simultaneously, David and Rebecca successfully outsmarted Caddis, but the closing scenes of Butterfly hinted at a battle that continued to rage on.
The series “Butterfly” is adapted from the graphic novel series by Arash Amel, published by Boom! Studios. It stars Daniel Dae Kim, Reina Hardesty, Louis Landau, Piper Perabo, Kim Tae-hee, Park Hae-soo, and Kim Ji-hoon in key roles. The entire six episodes were released on Amazon Prime Video on August 13, 2025.
Did Rebecca Kill David’s Wife in Butterfly Show?
Following the rescue of Rebecca from her captors, Juno and Caddis, David chose not to interrogate his daughter about the details right away. He had faith that everything went smoothly and believed Juno hadn’t tricked Rebecca into deceiving him once more. Yet, it could have potential consequences that may pose problems for him later on.
In the closing scene, David, Rebecca, Eunju, and Minhee were seen enjoying dinner at a restaurant, discussing their upcoming plans. However, this pleasant ending took an unexpected turn when Rebecca and Eunju excused themselves to go to the restroom together. When they didn’t return promptly, David became concerned and checked on them. Upon entering, he was shocked to find Eunju severely injured on the floor, and Rebecca had vanished without a trace.
In simpler terms, some people speculate that because of her history as a destructive force for Caddis and her relationship with Judo, Rebecca might have been responsible for Eunju’s death. However, many find it unlikely that Rebecca would kill Eunju, as she had undergone significant character development alongside David over the course of six episodes, making such an action seemingly out of character.
After multiple viewings of the closing sequences, I’m positively certain that Rebecca didn’t murder her victim due to a single piece of evidence.
Upon verifying that Rebecca didn’t carry a knife or any weapon into the restroom with Eunju, a more detailed examination revealed her exchanging an intimidating gaze with the waitress at around 42:28 (as captured in the video), implying that this restaurant worker may have been involved in Eunju’s murder. The absence of any other staff members in the final scene further suggests that there are suspicious activities taking place within the restaurant.
Given her background in identifying potential dangers, Rebecca might have realized that the waitress was a covert agent with malicious intentions, explaining why she accompanied Eunju to the restroom to safeguard her. Rebecca went missing when David found Eunju since she could have trailed the killer in an attempt to apprehend them and clear her name.
So, Who Killed David’s Wife in Butterfly?
There are various suspects when it comes to the question of who murdered David’s wife, given their complex past involving Caddis and Rebecca.
At the summit of the list could be Juno, once the leader of Caddis and a business associate of David. Given their past encounter where David, along with his daughter, overpowered her and prevented her from seeing her son Oliver, there might’ve been lingering resentment on Juno’s part. However, constantly attributing David’s wife’s death in the finale of “Butterfly” to Juno may seem too straightforward and repetitive.
For Butterfly Season 2 to stand out, it might be interesting to depict David and Juno joining forces in a quest to locate Rebecca. Since Season 1 revealed that Juno still harbored feelings for Rebecca despite her decision to stay with David, the show could present an unconventional partnership between them as they search for Rebecca. Furthermore, Season 2 could delve into their shared history with Caddis, offering more insight into their past.
Additionally, there’s a strong possibility that the adversaries of Eunju’s father, Doo Tae, might have played a significant role in the demise of David’s spouse. This suspicion grows even stronger after it was unveiled in Season 1 that he is now associated with a perilous gang in South Korea.
Regardless of whether Doo Tae’s adversaries were responsible for Eunju’s demise, it’s significant to consider that her passing would add more tension to David’s already troubled relationship with his father-in-law, potentially escalating their differences into a full-blown confrontation.
Regardless of the circumstances, David would face numerous challenges should Butterfly come back for another season, as the idea of attaining normalcy in his life currently seems unrealistic.
