With new shows based on both Bosch and Sherlock in the works, it’s clear Prime Video is overlooking a significant chance to expand its offerings.
Harry Bosch and Sherlock Holmes are two of the most famous detectives ever created. Both characters have recently been successfully adapted for television, which has led to new spin-offs being developed to continue their stories.
Even though these new shows look promising, they highlight a missed opportunity for a well-established detective series to increase its profits.
Bosch & Sherlock Are Both Getting Spinoffs With Younger Versions Of Their Characters
Fans of Harry Bosch and Sherlock Holmes might be disappointed to learn that Titus Welliver and Benedict Cumberbatch aren’t likely to reprise their iconic roles in major new projects anytime soon. However, there’s good news: both characters will be returning to television, with new actors taking on the parts and offering fresh takes on the stories.
Prime Video will premiere a new show called Young Sherlock on March 4, 2026, starring Hero Fiennes Tiffin as a 19-year-old Sherlock Holmes.
Guy Ritchie is directing the series, with Matthew Parkhill serving as showrunner. The show is based on Andrew Lane’s Young Sherlock Holmes books and the first season will have eight episodes. Plus, fans of Bosch can expect a similar spin-off soon.
Cameron Monaghan will play a younger version of Titus Welliver’s famous character in the prequel to Bosch, called Start of Watch.
Although it’s disappointing that Titus Welliver and Benedict Cumberbatch aren’t reprising their iconic detective roles, the new shows both sound fantastic. Prime Video has clearly scored two big successes with these prequel series. However, they’re potentially missing out on even more success by using the same strategy with another popular detective franchise.
After Bosch & Sherlock, A “Young Reacher” Series Does Not Sound Too Bad
Prime Video’s Reacher is a huge hit, performing better than almost any other show on the platform. Now, a spin-off focusing on the character Neagley is in the works. Given the success of upcoming shows about young versions of Bosch and Sherlock Holmes, it seems like a Young Reacher series could also be very popular.
Throughout the three seasons of Reacher, we’ve seen how interesting the backstory of Alan Ritchson’s character can be. His experiences in the military and the important values his parents instilled in him offer plenty of material for future seasons.
If the shows featuring young Sherlock and Harry Bosch are successful on Prime Video, the streaming service might also create a spin-off series about a young Jack Reacher.
