Before New Peaky Blinders Spinoff, This 4-Part Period Drama Is Required Viewing (& It’s Leaving Netflix Soon)

Netflix is losing another popular historical drama soon, as a new spin-off is in development. Turn: Washington’s Spies, featuring Jamie Bell—who also stars in the upcoming spin-off—will no longer be available on the streaming service next month.

According to What’s On Netflix, the historical drama Turn will no longer be available on the streaming service after June 10th. The show stars Jamie Bell, known for his upcoming role in the Peaky Blinders spin-off, and centers on Abraham Woodhull, a real historical figure who played a key part in the Culper Spy Ring during the American Revolution. Turn covers the years 1776 to 1781, showing how the war affected ordinary people working as secret double agents.

New Peaky Blinders Star Leads AMC’s Gripping Period Drama

Turn: Washington’s Spies centers around Abe Woodhull, a young farmer struggling with divided loyalties – his family supported the British, but he admired those fighting for American independence. Living on Long Island, which was occupied by British forces, he joins forces with childhood friends to create the Culper Ring, a secret spy network dedicated to uncovering British military plans.

The show follows Abe and his team as they work with General Washington to help the Continental Army win the war. Their courageous actions pioneered the techniques of modern spying. Over four seasons, a total of 40 episodes were produced.

Besides Jamie Bell, the series Turn: Washington’s Spies had a talented cast including Seth Numrich, Daniel Henshall (known for The Babadook), Heather Lind, Meegan Warner from Once Upon a Time, and Burn Gorman. The show was inspired by the 2007 book Washington’s Spies: The Story of America’s First Spy Ring by Alexander Rose.

Despite generally positive reviews and a dedicated audience throughout its four seasons, the historical drama Turn: Washington’s Spies had a rocky start. While the show eventually gained popularity, critics were initially divided, resulting in a ‘Rotten’ score of 54% on Rotten Tomatoes. Reviewers found the show’s portrayal of the American Revolution inconsistent, making it more disappointing than captivating.

Viewers really enjoyed the first season, giving it an 85% approval rating based on over 250 reviews. Subsequent seasons were even more popular: Season 2 received a 90% approval rating, and Season 3 earned a perfect 100%. The final season was also well-received, scoring 80% and receiving praise for its satisfying conclusion.
