For nearly ninety years, Batman has been reimagined in countless ways, with some versions being more powerful or frightening than others. But a new variant cover for an upcoming issue of Batman presents a particularly disturbing take on the iconic hero.
Batman #14 Variant Cover Turns The Hero Into A Tree
Batman’s success in fighting crime in Gotham City relies heavily on intimidation. He uses his costume – inspired by the bat itself – and other tactics to strike fear into the hearts of criminals. But for those watching, seeing a character trapped in seemingly hopeless situations is what’s truly terrifying.
The cover art for the next issue of Batman #14 presents a striking and unusual image. It depicts Batman seemingly transformed into a tree growing out of the Batsignal. He appears gaunt and in pain, with branches sprouting from his shoulders, creating a truly unsettling scene.
Only one villain could drive Batman to change so drastically. However, the appearance of this transformed Batman – specifically its colors and costume details – still reflects the current look established by writer Matt Fraction and artist Jorge Jiménez. This suggests the change is likely a symbolic representation of Batman’s conflict with this particular ecoterrorist, rather than a permanent alteration, as will be revealed in the next issue.
KyuYong Eom, the artist who created the variant cover for Batman #14, frequently features Poison Ivy in his work. The South Korean artist has done several strikingly realistic and occasionally suggestive variant covers for Poison Ivy’s own comic book series, and other titles as well.
Poison Ivy Is A Thorn In Batman’s Side In Bad Seeds
KyuYong Eom designed the variant cover for Batman #14 to hint at the story’s themes. The title itself suggests Poison Ivy plays a major role, and the plot promises unexpected twists and turns.
The current story arc begins with a preview in Poison Ivy #47, released on August 26th. In it, Pamela Isley, who is currently the mayor of Gotham, finds her control of the city slipping as citizens publicly oppose her leadership. As shown in the first chapter of the crossover event, Batman: Bad Seeds – Sunset #1, also released on the 26th, she plans a response that fits her character perfectly.
Ivy’s plants are taking over Gotham, turning the city into a wild, almost ancient landscape. This creates chaos for everyone – the Batman family, their enemies, and ordinary citizens – as they struggle to survive, especially with Police Commissioner Vandal Savage launching increasingly violent attacks.
Wilson is helping to manage the event, working with Matt Fraction from August to October. The writers and artists who regularly work on the comic books Detective Comics, Batgirl, Batwoman, Catwoman, Nightwing, and Harley Quinn are also creating chapters for this story.
Batman #14 hits the shelves on Oct. 7, 2026.
