Avatar: Fire And Ash Debuts Tens Of Millions Below Way Of Water Despite Instantly Hitting No. 1

Despite being a big hit in its first weekend, the new movie Avatar: Fire and Ash isn’t quite reaching the same box office numbers as earlier Avatar films. This third installment in the franchise, released on December 19th, faces high expectations, considering the first two movies – 2009’s Avatar and 2022’s The Way of Water – are among the highest-grossing films ever made.

According to Deadline, Avatar: Fire and Ash is expected to bring in between $85 and $90 million domestically over its opening weekend. This will easily make it the top movie of the weekend, though it’s the second-highest opening weekend ever for the Avatar series.

While the new Avatar: Fire and Ash movie is expected to earn more on its opening weekend than the very first Avatar film ($77 million, or $115.6 million adjusted for inflation), it’s currently behind the opening numbers of Avatar: The Way of Water. The Way of Water brought in an impressive $134.1 million on its debut weekend, putting Fire and Ash more than $40 million behind.

A movie’s strong opening weekend isn’t always a sign of how well it will do overall. For example, the first Avatar movie ultimately earned much more money than Avatar: The Way of Water – $2.924 billion versus $2.343 billion – even when not accounting for changes in ticket prices over time.
