Hollywood used to be very good at finding humor even in dark or disturbing subjects. They did this without making light of the serious parts of the story. Unfortunately, many recent crime comedies seem to have forgotten this skill, opting for easy laughs instead of balancing humor with the grimness of the plot.
Despite strong praise for the 2025 film Caught Stealing, starring Austin Butler, it didn’t perform well in theaters, earning only $32 million against a $65 million budget. Fortunately, the crime dramedy is now available to stream on Netflix for those who didn’t get a chance to see it in cinemas.
Caught Stealing Is A Funny, Old School Crime Thriller Throwback
As previously discussed, this genre has faced challenges lately, but some creators still manage to find humor even in very bleak circumstances. This style of storytelling was particularly popular in the 1990s with directors like the Coen Brothers, Quentin Tarantino, and Guy Ritchie at the height of their careers.
It’s perfect that the film Caught Stealing takes place in 1998 New York City. That’s where Henry Thompson, played by Austin Butler, agrees to catsit for his neighbor, Russ (Matt Smith). This simple favor quickly pulls Henry into a dangerous and confusing world of corrupt police officers, ruthless Russian gangsters, and cold-blooded assassins, all centered around a large sum of money.
Simply put, this is a story about an average guy caught in a terrible situation he didn’t ask for – a classic case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Based on a novel by Charlie Huston, who also wrote the script, the film is relentlessly intense, and while it has darkly humorous moments, it’s hard to call it a comedy.
Luckily, Caught Stealing remains consistently funny and maintains an energetic pace that keeps you engaged. The cast’s performances are a major source of the humor, featuring talents like Academy Award winner Regina King, Zoë Kravitz, Liev Schreiber, Vincent D’Onofrio, Benito Martínez Ocasio (Bad Bunny), and even a cat named Tonic as Bud.
Austin Butler Has Never Been Better In Caught Stealing
The movie Caught Stealing features a fantastic cast that really brings the smart and captivating story to life. But it’s Austin Butler who truly shines – he’s captivating from start to finish and rightfully commands the screen whenever he’s on it.
Austin Butler became a major star after receiving an Academy Award nomination and winning a Golden Globe for his portrayal of Elvis Presley in Baz Luhrmann’s biopic, Elvis. While that role launched him into the spotlight, some argue that his work as Hank Thompson is actually his greatest achievement to date.
Butler brilliantly portrays a bartender with a natural charm, but beneath the surface lies a deep sadness. This man once dreamed of a baseball career, but a terrible accident shattered those hopes. Knowing his difficult past makes his current, devastating situation even more heartbreaking as his life falls apart.
Caught Stealing might not have been such an arresting roller coaster ride without such a likable protagonist to earn the audience’s sympathies and without such a to bring him to life. Yet, the film’s approach to crafting a comedy crime drama might not have felt so unique either without the vision of a filmmaker who has never delved into this genre before.
Caught Stealing Is A Departure For Darren Aronofsky
The film Caught Stealing has a style reminiscent of the Coen Brothers’ work, particularly films like the Oscar-winning Fargo (1996) and The Big Lebowski (1998). Surprisingly, it was directed by Darren Aronofsky – known for his very different style of filmmaking.
The filmmaker, known for his Academy Award nomination, isn’t typically associated with darkly comedic thrillers. He’s built his reputation on genuinely dark and intense thrillers. He first gained attention with his 1998 film, Pi, and followed it up with the profoundly sad Requiem for a Dream. He continued to impress and deeply move audiences with films like the 2008 drama The Wrestler, and later sparked conversation—and frightened many—with his 2017 horror film, mother!
Before Caught Stealing, director Darren Aronofsky was known exclusively for serious, dramatic films, so his involvement with a comedy surprised a lot of people. But it turned out to be a surprisingly great fit.
Only a director with Aronofsky’s serious and thoughtful approach would be willing to tackle such a dark story head-on. His unique vision is exactly what this film needed to satisfy fans of truly gritty and cynical crime dramas.
It was encouraging to see the film gain traction on the platform in some international markets, particularly considering its disappointing performance in theaters. However, it hasn’t become a huge hit on Netflix yet – it briefly reached the Top 10 in December 2025, but only at number seven.
Maybe it simply needs more time to connect with an audience and gain the devoted following it deserves. As Austin Butler’s character, Hank, discovers in Caught Stealing, worthwhile things often require patience… and a lot of hardship along the way.
