Apple TV is embracing a new genre.
Recently, many people have been comparing Apple TV to HBO. Like HBO did for years, Apple TV is investing in unique, original shows and high-profile adaptations. This strategy is paying off, with successful series like Widow’s Bay, Pluribus, and Severance leading the way.
Apple TV has gained recognition at major awards shows like the Emmys and Golden Globes. While known for its dramas and documentaries, the platform has also experimented with other types of programming. Apple’s first original show, Planet of the Apps, debuted in June 2017 on Apple Music, even before Apple TV+ was launched. They’ve also created competition series focused on specific genres, including KPopped and My Kind of Country.
After more than six years, Apple TV+ is finally creating its first dating show, according to Deadline. Titled The Last Person on Earth, the show will feature matchmakers pairing up people with very different personalities.
The show follows couples embarking on an adventure in a beautiful, secluded location. Described as a social experiment over eight episodes, it examines how couples navigate isolation, differing viewpoints, and the age-old question of whether opposites truly belong together. The premiere date is still to be determined.
Well-known psychotherapist Esther Perel is joining the team of matchmakers for the show, The Last Person on Earth. Perel has written several bestselling books and hosts the popular podcast Where Should We Begin?, where she shares recordings from her therapy sessions with couples. She recently advised on the comedy film The Invite and released a statement about this new opportunity, which you can find below.

The book The Last Person on Earth bravely examines relationships, questioning our usual ideas about finding the ‘right’ person. It encourages us to let go of rigid expectations and view dating as an exciting journey into the unfamiliar. When we venture beyond what’s comfortable and safe, truly passionate relationships can grow.
While some might see The Last Person on Earth as Apple’s try to rival popular dating shows like those on Netflix, it actually represents a significant move for Apple TV+. Since launching in late 2019, Apple TV+ has become known for high-quality dramas and films, and this show marks its most ambitious venture into the reality television genre so far – done completely their way.
Even though it’s still early days, I’m really impressed with Apple bringing on Esther Perel and tackling such an interesting idea. It feels very consistent with the quality they’ve shown in their original shows – they clearly want to work with big names and deliver the kinds of stories we love, but with a unique and polished twist. Only time will tell if this approach really works for ‘The Last Person on Earth,’ but I’m hopeful!
