Anya Taylor-Joy is a highly praised actress quickly becoming one of the best of her generation, known for her roles in films like The Witch and Glass. Now, her lesser-known sci-fi thriller, The Gorge, is gaining popularity on streaming platforms, hitting a new record a year after its release.
According to FlixPatrol, the movie The Gorge is currently the third most popular film on Apple TV worldwide. While it didn’t get much attention when it was released on February 14, 2025, it’s now become a streaming hit. It recently reached a major milestone by staying in the top 10 most-watched movies in the US for an impressive 400 days.
What Is The Gorge About?
The movie The Gorge centers around Levi Kane and Drasa, portrayed by Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy. They are both highly skilled snipers tasked with guarding opposite sides of a deep gorge, with strict rules against communication, outside contact, or knowing the details of their mission. However, as they spend more time in isolation, they begin to communicate and a connection develops between them.
As the story unfolds, the film shifts its focus to the developing romance between Levi and Drasa. While there’s some action, the science fiction aspects come into play as they begin to investigate the gorge and uncover its secrets, and what those secrets could mean for the world.
Scott Derrickson, known for directing horror movies such as The Exorcism of Emily Rose, Sinister, and The Black Phone, directed The Gorge. Bartholomew is played by an actor who hires Levi to protect one of the towers. Sci-fi icon Sigourney Weaver, famous for her role in the Alien films, also appears in the movie.
The Gorge Received Mixed Reviews from Critics
The film wasn’t a universal hit with critics, earning mostly mixed to positive reviews. Some felt it tried to do too much by combining different genres without fully developing any of them. Critics gave it a 62% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while audiences enjoyed it more, giving it a 74% score.
Film critic Christy Lemire, writing for LAist’s FilmWeek, noted that while The Gorge attempts to combine different genres, the science fiction elements weren’t as successful as the romantic storyline. She praised the strong chemistry and visual appeal of the two lead actors, as well as the film’s overall look and music.
Keith Phipps of TV Guide praised ‘The Gorge,’ saying it’s an enjoyable watch when it concentrates on the central love story and the danger the characters face, which is most of the time. Brian Tallerico at RogerEbert.com noted that despite a slow start, the film ultimately lives up to its promise.
Critics are split on the film The Gorge, but audiences keep returning to watch it. Viewers seem to be connecting with the movie’s romance, science fiction aspects, or the strong performances from Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy, leading to its success and a recent achievement on streaming platforms.
The Gorge is available to stream on Apple TV.
