As a huge movie fan, I’m not surprised to see a classic sci-fi series absolutely crushing it on streaming right now – it’s even doing really well on platforms I didn’t expect! It feels like Disney is really taking the lead in this streaming battle, and this franchise is a big reason why.
I just finished watching Alien: Romulus on HBO Max, and it’s amazing! It actually hit number one on the platform’s charts worldwide, according to FlixPatrol. It’s way ahead of the second most popular movie right now, Jurassic World: Rebirth, which is pretty impressive for a revival of such a classic franchise.
As a movie buff, I’m really surprised by what’s happening with streaming right now! It’s so weird to see Alien: Romulus and Jurassic World: Rebirth – neither of which are even made by Warner Bros. (they’re now part of Disney, and Jurassic World is from Universal, a big competitor!) – taking over HBO Max. You wouldn’t expect films from rival studios to be so prominently featured there, but they’re completely overshadowing everything else on the platform.
Along with the new film Alien: Romulus, several older Alien movies have been popular on HBO Max. The original Alien from 1979 briefly reached number 3 on the platform’s charts before moving to number 6. James Cameron’s 1986 sequel, Aliens, started at number 5 but is no longer appearing in the top rankings.
Over forty years after the original Alien film by Ridley Scott, the recent sequel successfully reintroduced the franchise to a new audience. Critics and viewers generally liked it, as shown by its 80% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and 7.1/10 score on IMDb. The film also earned a solid $350 million at the box office, signaling to Disney that there’s continued interest in the Alien universe.
What’s Next for the Alien Franchise?
With Alien: Romulus, the Alien series is back, and fans are hoping this is just the beginning of a new wave of films. A direct sequel is already in the early stages of development, and Ridley Scott is involved as a producer.
Recently, the popular Alien franchise expanded to television with the FX series Alien: Earth, developed by Noah Hawley. The first season proved to be very successful, and…
Beyond the projects already announced, several others are still being considered. Among them is a movie starring , which the actress has said is in the very early stages of planning for a 2025 release. Ridley Scott has expressed interest in revisiting the series, but there are currently no concrete plans for him to do so.
With the Predator movies doing so well lately, people are speculating about a possible crossover with the Alien franchise. Disney hasn’t officially said anything about it, but considering how successful both series have been, a fight between the Xenomorphs and the Yautja seems likely to happen eventually.
Alien: Romulus is available to stream on Hulu and HBO Max.
