Alan Ritchson’s latest action movie, War Machine, has become one of Netflix’s biggest hits of 2026. It quickly reached the top spot on the Top 10 list for English films and was viewed 39.3 million times in its opening days, making it the second-largest debut of the year so far on the platform.
In War Machine, Alan Ritchson plays 81, a skilled combat engineer who joins the US Army Rangers to honor a promise he made to his brother. During the final, challenging stage of his training, 81 and his team are suddenly attacked by a massive alien machine determined to wipe them out.
Most critics are giving positive reviews to War Machine. The film has received a user rating of 70% and has also been noticed by a well-known video game designer.
Hideo Kojima shared on Twitter that he really enjoyed the film War Machine, describing it as a mix of Predator and Metal Gear. He called it a fun movie for fans of the genre, praising Alan Ritchson (“Reacher”) for his performance and noting that Dennis Quaid also stars.
War Machine Is Off to a Strong Start on Netflix
War Machine is a decent action film, but it doesn’t explore its ideas very deeply and doesn’t make the most of its supporting actors. While Jon Ritchson delivers a solid performance and does his best to carry the movie, one actor can’t do everything, and ultimately, War Machine isn’t particularly memorable.

War Machine follows an elite U.S. Army Ranger team whose intense training exercise transforms into a desperate battle for survival against a terrifying, unexpected enemy. The film, directed by Patrick Hughes, features Alan Ritchson, Dennis Quaid, Stephan James, Jai Courtney, Esai Morales, Keiynan Lonsdale, Jarryd Goundrey, and Daniel Webber.
Alan Ritchson, who plays Staff Sergeant 81 in War Machine, wondered how that character would fare in a fight against Jack Reacher, the lead role he’s most famous for.
Alan Ritchson thinks Reacher might simply be impulsive enough to kill someone without much justification. However, he also points out that Reacher is incredibly determined and doesn’t give up easily.
