Absolute Wonder Woman’s New Power Is a Blessing & Curse for DC Hero

Among the well-known DC superheroes reimagined in the Absolute Universe, Absolute Wonder Woman has undergone the biggest transformation. In this version, she’s less of a traditional warrior and more of a powerful sorceress, relying on magic more than sword fighting. A sneak peek at her newest story shows she still shares something in common with the original Wonder Woman, but also reveals a new ability that comes with both benefits and drawbacks.

Absolute Wonder Woman #19, written by Kelly Thompson and illustrated by Hayden Sherman, begins with a look back at Diana’s youth in the Greek underworld. This is where she matured and learned magic from her adoptive mother, Circe. Previous issues showed that Diana also received training from other goddesses like Athena, Artemis, and Hecate.

A discussion between Aphrodite and Circe shows they didn’t just instruct Diana; they infused the final Amazon with a portion of their own power. But, as often happens with gifts from the gods in Greek mythology, this power comes with a hidden cost.

What is the downside of Absolute Wonder Woman’s new power?

I was absolutely fascinated to learn that Aphrodite confided in Circe about a special gift she’d given Diana. Apparently, it’s a kind of magic that enhances her natural charm and makes her even more appealing to others. It won’t give Diana complete control over anyone’s feelings, but it will definitely make people more drawn to her. It’s a bittersweet gift, though. I feel so bad for Diana, because she’ll always have to wonder if the affection she receives is genuine, or if it’s simply because of Aphrodite’s blessing making her inherently lovable. It must be a terrible burden to carry.

This story offers a fresh take on both classic Greek myths and the origins of Wonder Woman. In the comics after the ‘Crisis’ event, Wonder Woman’s powers came from gifts given by various Greek gods. Most of these gifts simply boosted the natural abilities of the Amazons – for example, Demeter enhanced their strength and stamina. But some gods, like Hermes, gave her entirely new powers, such as the ability to fly. The concept of each blessing also carrying a curse feels true to the Greek mythology that originally inspired Wonder Woman.

Absolute Wonder Woman #19 arrives in comic shops everywhere on April 22, 2026.
