Viewers of the ABC comedy have been eagerly anticipating news about a potential third season. Now, the show’s fate is confirmed, and it’s great news for everyone who loves it.
Great news for fans of Shifting Gears: the show has been officially renewed for a third season! This week also brought a second season order for the Scrubs revival. However, the future of new crime drama R.J. Decker is still uncertain. It’s currently the only scripted series on the network whose fate hasn’t been decided, and its chances of getting renewed are considered even – while it started strong, ratings haven’t quite met the network’s expectations.
Shifting Gears Will Return for Season 3
Everyone anticipated a renewal of Shifting Gears, and it seems likely to happen. The show is ABC’s most popular comedy on traditional television, and the Season 2 finale had the highest viewership across all platforms since the season began. However, ABC hasn’t announced how many episodes will be in Season 3. The first season had 10 episodes, and the second season expanded to 13.
The new season of Scrubs started strong, becoming the most-watched comedy on any network for viewers aged 18-49. Within the first 35 days, it attracted over 11 million viewers across various platforms. The show’s success was likely boosted by the return of many original cast members, tapping into viewers’ nostalgia.
If ABC doesn’t renew R.J. Decker, they’re likely to order a new spin-off of The Rookie for the 2026-27 season. The pilot for this potential show has gotten positive feedback internally. Because of budget limitations, ABC will probably choose either this spin-off or renew R.J. Decker for the fall television season, though it’s not entirely out of the question for both to happen. However, if both R.J. Decker and The Rookie: North are greenlit, the network would need to reduce the number of episodes for other programs to cover the costs.
Shifting Gears Has Been a Hit for ABC
The new ABC series, Shifting Gears, premiered in early 2025. It centers on Matt Parker, a man who owns an auto restoration shop and is raising a family after the loss of his wife. His life is turned upside down when his long-lost daughter, Riley, shows up with her two kids, Carter and Georgia. The show also stars Seann William Scott and Daryl Mitchell as Gabriel and Stitch, two of Matt’s coworkers.
Julie Thacker Scully and Mike Scully created the show and also served as executive producers. They were joined by Allen, John Pasquin, Richard Baker, Rick Messina, Marty Adelstein, Becky Clements, John Amodeo, Michelle Nader, Bob Daily, and Jim Patterson, who all contributed as executive producers as well.
Shifting Gears is streaming on Hulu.
