Everyone in the film industry and movie fans are thrilled with the success of this original film, which has become one of the biggest hits in recent years. The movie is based on Andy Weir’s popular novel, and it surprised everyone by performing so well, especially since it wasn’t connected to any established series.
The movie Project Hail Mary performed very well during its opening weekend. While it’s too early to say if it will be profitable overall, the strong start indicates it’s likely to be a success. Predictably, discussions about a sequel, Project Hail Mary 2, have already begun.
Could Project Hail Mary 2 Happen?
There’s been no official word on whether a follow-up is happening, but sources say it’s still possible. While there aren’t any formal plans between the author and Amazon MGM Studios yet, the author is expected to lead any potential continuation.
As a huge movie fan, I was really excited to hear about the adaptation of Andy Weir’s latest novel – he’s the author of The Martian, which Ridley Scott turned into a fantastic film with Matt Damon. This time around, Ryan Gosling was so impressed with the book he actually bought the rights before it was even released! He not only starred in the movie but also produced it, alongside the experienced Amy Pascal (known for Spider-Man). And get this – Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the directing team behind Spider-Verse, were brought on board! Plus, Drew Goddard, who did such a great job writing the script for The Martian, came back to adapt this one, which is a huge vote of confidence in the project.
The movie cost about $200 million to make and has already earned nearly that amount back. But, to actually make a profit, it needs to earn around $600 million overall, because theaters take half of the revenue and marketing is expensive. Fortunately, the movie is currently on track to do well.
If the movie does well and becomes Amazon MGM Studios’ most popular film, a sequel is likely. The challenge is that the original story isn’t part of a series – at least not yet. It would be unusual for the author to write a sequel, as he’s never revisited any of his previous stories. He has considered some ideas for continuing the story, but nothing is confirmed.
I loved the ending of Project Hail Mary – it felt very similar to the book that inspired it, but with a slightly more hopeful tone. The original story left a bit more time open at the end, which definitely felt like it could lead to another book or even a movie down the road. It’s exciting to think about what could happen next!
Another Andy Weir Project Is in the Works
While a sequel to Project Hail Mary hasn’t been officially announced, Andy Weir’s novel Artemis is currently being adapted for the screen. Directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller have been working on the Artemis adaptation for years, actually starting before the Project Hail Mary project.
We’ve confirmed the existence of an Artemis script, and it’s fantastic! The biggest challenge for years was figuring out how to realistically portray one-sixth gravity, since the story is set on the moon. But we believe we’ve finally solved that problem.
Project Hail Mary is currently playing in theaters.
