Paramount unfortunately canceled a promising new science fiction show before it had a chance to find an audience. Luckily, fans of the genre have a lot to look forward to in 2026, including the upcoming Blade Runner: 2099 and the fifth season of The Boys.
With new sci-fi shows like Apple TV’s version of Neuromancer and the continuation of The Expanse coming soon, it seemed likely Paramount would invest heavily in the genre. However, the cancellation of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy suggests otherwise, despite the potential for success.
Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Could, In Theory, Have Lasted Forever
As a huge Star Trek fan, I was really disappointed to hear that Star Trek: Starfleet Academy was canceled. It means, as of March 2026, there’s nothing new in the works – no shows or movies being filmed at all! That’s the first time that’s happened since 2017, which is pretty shocking. While I’m excited about all things Trek, Starfleet Academy felt like it had real staying power – a premise that could have kept the show going for years and years if they’d just let it.
Set 300 years in the future, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy centered on the very first group of students at Starfleet Academy as they learned to become officers. While Holly Hunter played Captain Nahla Ake, a half-Lanthanide instructor, the show primarily followed the experiences of these new cadets.
Okay, so Starfleet Academy was a really interesting shift for the Star Trek universe. It was their first time really focusing on teenagers, and honestly, it felt like a blend of a typical high school drama and sci-fi adventure. We got just as much invested in their romances and rivalries as we did in the bigger Federation storylines. In a way, it reminded me a lot of Prodigy – a show that really leans into a younger audience and prioritizes character relationships alongside the action.
Starfleet Academy Wasn’t Given The Chance To Improve With Feedback
Despite strong positive reviews – the first season of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy received an 87% rating on Rotten Tomatoes – Paramount surprisingly canceled the show just two months after it began. While the second season has already been completed and will air with ten new episodes, this will be the show’s final season.
Because seasons 1 and 2 of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy were filmed one right after the other, the show wasn’t able to use fan reactions to improve the second season. This quick turnaround ultimately hurt the show’s potential, and unfortunately, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy was cancelled before it could really find its footing, becoming another promising sci-fi series cut short by Paramount.
