For more than a hundred years, this studio has delivered some of cinema’s most memorable and adaptable stories, ranging from classics like Shane to more recent films like The Hateful Eight. It’s a place that draws top writers, directors, and actors, and its stories often explore complex characters, historical settings, and shades of gray morality – all ingredients for great filmmaking. However, not everything they produce is a masterpiece; some films are entertainingly bad, like Wesley Snipes‘ attempt to revive the Western genre.
Westerns haven’t been as popular since the early 2000s, even with hits from directors like Quentin Tarantino and the Coen Brothers. Instead of big, sweeping films like Dances With Wolves, smaller studios have had to make Westerns with very limited budgets, which often makes it hard to create a compelling story. Wesley Snipes’ 2012 film is a prime example – it’s a strange and unusual movie, but it’s entertainingly bad and worth watching for that reason.
Gallowwalkers is a Bizarre Western Horror Flick
Wesley Snipes played the role of Aman, a traveler, in the 2012 film Gallowwalkers. The movie centers on Aman’s journey through a harsh landscape as he’s relentlessly pursued by undead enemies. We learn that Aman was brought back to life by his mother after being murdered while seeking revenge for the assault of his lover. But this resurrection is more of a burden than a gift, because anyone Aman kills also returns as one of the undead. These aren’t typical zombies; they rot and replace their own decaying skin with the skin of innocent people. The only way to permanently defeat them is to destroy their brains.
Gallowwalkers isn’t the artistic Western it seems to aspire to be; it feels more like a disposable story you’d find in an old comic book. While the film had potential, it suffers from poor execution – from Wesley Snipes’ overly dramatic narration to its uninspired visuals. It ultimately falls into the ‘so bad it’s good’ category. Despite trying to be profound, it’s simply a light, entertaining gunslinger story best enjoyed as a one-time watch.
The villains are clearly inspired by characters from the classic film Once Upon a Time in the West, and one character, Aman, feels like a throwback to the rebellious heroes of 1960s cinema. The filmmakers even cast an actress who looks like Claudia Cardinale, who played Jill McBain. The story also echoes elements of For a Few Dollars More, but with a supernatural edge. Despite all these influences, the movie delivers a truly bizarre and unique take on the zombie genre.
Released three years before the acclaimed film Bone Tomahawk, Gallowwalkers tries to achieve a similar gritty style and violent tone. But when viewed alongside it, the weaknesses in Gallowwalkers‘ story and filmmaking become obvious. While Bone Tomahawk quickly gained a dedicated following, many Western fans aren’t even aware that Wesley Snipes’ movie exists – and some believe that’s for good reason.
Westerns Are Often Vehicles For Comeback Movies
Westerns are becoming a popular choice for established Hollywood actors looking to revive their careers. Because these films generally don’t rely on expensive special effects, they offer a relatively low-cost production option. It’s become almost a tradition for veteran actors – like Alec Baldwin with Rust and Nicolas Cage, who has starred in several – to take on Western roles as a way to demonstrate they still have what it takes. However, these films often aren’t high quality, and studios frequently prioritize an actor’s recognizable name over a strong script or production.
If Gallowwalkers had been made by a more skilled team, it might have successfully launched Wesley Snipes’ career resurgence. Unfortunately, the film is most noticeable for its blatant copying of Sergio Leone’s dialogue and filmmaking style, attempting to mimic the Italian director’s deliberate pacing. However, viewers familiar with Leone’s work will easily recognize the imitation, and it simply doesn’t measure up to the original.
The film and its creators deserve credit for not taking themselves too seriously and clearly having fun with the material. This self-awareness helps redeem it for viewers who enjoy low-budget independent films, and Wesley Snipes seems to be enjoying himself, which adds to the entertainment. It might have even been more successful if it had leaned into the concept of being a Western take on ‘Blade’.
The Indie Western is a Tough Needle to Thread
Although Westerns aren’t typically box office hits anymore, the genre has never truly disappeared, particularly after the release of Django Unchained. That film proved the Wild West could still be a fun and adaptable setting, and its success led to a brief surge in smaller, independent Westerns. However, most of these films were quickly forgotten or weren’t very good. Often, they relied on a single well-known actor to attract viewers, but usually ended up disappointing them.
The Wild West often represents a fresh start and endless possibilities, making it an appealing setting for filmmakers hoping to strike gold. Sadly, the movie Gallowwalkers, a collaboration between Wesley Snipes and Andrew Goth, didn’t live up to that potential and has largely been forgotten.
