Biographical films, or biopics, are released every year, and they often become major contenders during awards season. Recent examples like Oppenheimer, Bohemian Rhapsody, The Eyes of Tammy Faye, One Night in Miami…, and Elvis have all been nominated for Oscars.
Several biographical films, including King Richard, Being the Ricardos, and Tick, Tick…Boom!, received Academy Award nominations in 2022. While King Richard was the only one up for Best Picture, many felt that Tick, Tick…Boom! deserved a nomination and its exclusion was a clear oversight, though the lack of a Best Picture nod for Being the Ricardos was understandable.
Tick, Tick…Boom! Should’ve Been Up For Best Picture
Tick, Tick…Boom! is the story of Jonathan Larson, the creator of the famous Broadway show Rent. The movie follows his early years as a playwright, showing the challenges he faced – both in his personal life and as he wrestled with his own insecurities – while trying to make his mark on the world.
Lin-Manuel Miranda’s first time directing a movie was a success! Tick, Tick…Boom! skillfully balanced heartfelt scenes with its energetic musical numbers. Critics loved the film, and it received numerous awards and a high 87% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
This film really seemed like a strong contender for Best Picture, particularly since it was nominated for Best Musical or Comedy at the Golden Globes. It was surprisingly overlooked in that same category at the Oscars, though. When we talk about snubs, it’s always worth considering what other film might have been nominated instead.
Picking the weakest Best Picture nominee from 2022 is pretty straightforward. While films like King Richard, CODA, Belfast, and West Side Story were all strong contenders, Don’t Look Up stands out as the most vulnerable. It received mixed reviews, with a 56% score on Rotten Tomatoes, making it an easy swap for a more deserving film like Tick, Tick…Boom!
The Movie Only Getting Two Nominations Was Disappointing
Despite not being nominated for Best Picture, Tick, Tick…Boom! received two other Academy Award nominations. Andrew Garfield was a strong contender for Best Actor, and many predicted he would win, particularly after receiving the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy. However, Will Smith ultimately won the Oscar for his performance in King Richard.
The film was nominated for Best Editing, a well-deserved recognition considering the skillfully crafted “Therapy” scene. Though two nominations are a great accomplishment, Tick, Tick…Boom! should have received even more consideration. It was also worthy of nominations for Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Director, Best Sound, and Best Cinematography.
