It’s been four years since the last season of Peaky Blinders was released on Netflix, and fans are still waiting for the movie sequel, Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man, which will arrive on March 6, 2026. This film is intended to be the final installment in the series. If you’ve been missing the show and searching for something similar, with a comparable historical setting, HBO’s Boardwalk Empire, executive produced by Martin Scorsese, is a good option.
Set mostly in Atlantic City during the 1920s Prohibition, Boardwalk Empire features Steve Buscemi as Nucky Thompson, a powerful city treasurer with ties to the mafia. The show portrays younger versions of famous figures like Al Capone, Lucky Luciano, and Meyer Lansky. It’s loosely based on Nelson Johnson’s 2002 book, Boardwalk Empire: The Birth, High Times, and Corruption of Atlantic City, which details the history of the city.
‘Boardwalk Empire’ is a Feast for the Eyes

HBO
In Peaky Blinders, Luca Changretta notices Tommy Shelby’s sharp style, and fashion is a big part of what makes the show so captivating. If you enjoy seeing gangsters in well-tailored suits, you’ll probably like Boardwalk Empire as well. Unlike The Sopranos, which favored casual wear, Peaky Blinders offers a more sophisticated and stylish take on the crime genre. However, the show isn’t just about the clothes – there’s much more to the story than just fashionable outfits.
Both Peaky Blinders and Boardwalk Empire deeply explore the lives of morally ambiguous characters, offering compelling depictions of gangster life on either side of the Atlantic. It’s no surprise they look and feel remarkably similar, boasting impressive attention to historical detail and beautiful settings. These shows are masters of atmosphere, using lighting, camera work, and set design to create a constant sense of tension, danger, and unease. Viewers can also enjoy a rich recreation of the post-WWI era, complete with lively pubs, elegant bars, classic cars, and fantastic music.
Both shows skillfully combine real events with fictional stories. Boardwalk Empire gets many historical details right – like Arnold Rothstein’s involvement in the Black Sox scandal and the Atlantic City Conference – while also creating compelling fictional storylines. Peaky Blinders does much the same thing. While Tommy Shelby is a character inspired by several British gangsters, the show also includes real historical figures like Winston Churchill and Oswald Mosley.
No Money (or Talent) Was Spared While Making ‘Boardwalk Empire’

HBO
Like classic mob bosses showing off their wealth, HBO and Martin Scorsese spared no expense on Boardwalk Empire. Scorsese directed the first episode himself, winning an Emmy and costing a whopping $18 million. The rest of the series was equally lavish, with episodes clearly benefiting from large budgets. In fact, the production team went as far as constructing a full-size, 300-foot boardwalk in Brooklyn for $5 million – all for the show’s visuals.

Beyond the financial investment, Terence Winter, an Emmy-winning writer and executive producer known for his work on The Sopranos, was brought in to guide Boardwalk Empire. Martin Scorsese and his team also carefully selected the actors, including Michael Shannon as a determined and fanatical lawman who seems just as corrupt as the criminals he pursues. They also cast Stephen Graham as a young Al Capone, a man quick to violence, even against reporters who simply ask him questions.
Throughout its five seasons, Boardwalk Empire was highly praised by critics and earned an impressive 57 Emmy nominations, winning 20 of them. It even took home a Golden Globe and two Screen Actors Guild Awards. While it may not have the same devoted following as shows like The Sopranos or Breaking Bad, fans of Peaky Blinders are sure to enjoy it.
