The acclaimed film Schindler’s List recently received news that will resonate with its fans of the last thirty years. While some debate whether it’s simply one of the greatest movies ever made, many consider it the greatest, and consistently defend its place among the most important films in cinematic history.
The show has a new streaming home: Peacock, starting March 1st. This is expected to bring a lot of viewers to the platform, and with good reason!
Many still consider Steven Spielberg’s Schindler’s List his masterpiece, and that’s high praise considering his incredible filmography – including blockbusters like Saving Private Ryan, Jurassic Park, Jaws, Indiana Jones, Back to the Future, and E.T.. But Schindler’s List stands apart as a deeply moving and unflinchingly realistic film.
Schindler’s List Is a Master Class In Cinema
Some movies depict war, while others are grand, sweeping epics. But Schindler’s List stands apart. Since its release in 1993, it has become the benchmark against which all films of these types are judged. Even today, it maintains remarkably high ratings – 98% from critics and 97% from audiences – on Rotten Tomatoes, making it nearly flawless.
The film features Liam Neeson, before he became famous for action movies like Taken, in a compelling and emotional performance as Oskar Schindler. Schindler was a German businessman during World War II who was horrified by the Holocaust and devised a plan to save over a thousand Polish-Jewish people by giving them jobs in his factories.
The making of the film is filled with fascinating stories. For example, Mel Gibson was once considered for the lead role of Oskar Schindler – a choice that would likely be viewed very differently today given his later controversies. Initially, director Steven Spielberg even thought about asking Martin Scorsese to direct the movie, but ultimately decided to take on the project himself.
That decision cemented Spielberg’s place among the greatest filmmakers, with even Martin Scorsese acknowledging that no one could have directed the film better.
The Message of Schindler’s List Is Still Felt Today
Schindler’s List became a global phenomenon, receiving critical acclaim with seven Academy Awards and three Golden Globes. It was also a huge financial success, earning over $322 million despite only costing $22 million to make – making it one of the most profitable movies ever.
In a 2024 interview with JNS, Steven Spielberg described his latest film as his best to date. While he didn’t claim it would always be his best, he said it was the project he was currently most proud of.
He explained the critical importance of the project and his personal commitment to leading it, stating he never thought he’d witness such horrific acts of antisemitism. He emphasized that both collecting stories from survivors of the October 7th attacks and preserving Holocaust testimony were essential to honoring their experiences, safeguarding history, and building a future free from hate. He stressed the need for continued unity and dedication to these goals.
Liam Neeson delivered a stunning performance, and Steven Spielberg’s direction made Schindler’s List a huge success, earning numerous awards and launching the careers of many involved. However, Spielberg’s most important goal is for audiences to remember the film’s powerful message.
Spielberg explained that antisemitism is always present, just beneath the surface of society. It occasionally resurfaces, becoming visible in public discourse and the news as hateful speech against Jewish people.
You can currently rent or buy Schindler’s List on most streaming platforms before it becomes available on Peacock starting March 1st.
