A new Game of Thrones play, titled The Mad King, is coming this summer and could offer insights into the story before the next book is released. The production, which will debut at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon, is the first-ever stage adaptation of the popular fantasy series. It focuses on a story that’s important to both the HBO show and George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire books.
The new play, Game of Thrones: The Mad King, takes place roughly 15 years before the start of the Game of Thrones TV series, during the reign of King Aerys II Targaryen. The story centers around the Tourney at Harrenhal, a famous event where Prince Rhaegar Targaryen controversially named Lyanna Stark as the Queen of Love and Beauty. This caused a scandal because Lyanna was promised to Robert Baratheon, and Rhaegar was already married to Elia Martell.
This event is a major turning point for the entire Game of Thrones story, further damaging the Targaryens’ reputation even among the most powerful families in Westeros. While the HBO show mentioned the previous king’s troubled reign and a possible romance involving Rhaegar, it didn’t show much detail. Similarly, the books haven’t fully explored what happened during this period. Fans have been hoping the next book, Winds of Winter, will reveal the truth, and we might soon get a preview of what’s to come.
Rhaegar’s Story Is Deeply Relevant To George R.R. Martin’s Ongoing Series (Including Winds Of Winter)
By the end of season 5, the Game of Thrones TV series had reached the same point in the story as George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire books. This means the show’s final three seasons could potentially differ significantly from what happens in the books. Martin is still working on the last two books in the series, with The Winds of Winter coming next. Fans hope this book will finally resolve major mysteries, like the truth about Jon Snow’s parentage and the meaning of the Prince That Was Promised prophecy.
Throughout the A Song of Ice and Fire series, the stories of Jon and Daenerys are deeply connected to Rhaegar Targaryen. Daenerys often dreams of her brother, revealing his intense focus on a prophecy. Rhaegar believed the prophecy of the Prince That Was Promised involved three dragons – suggesting it might actually refer to three Targaryens instead of just one.
Throughout Martin’s novels, it’s suggested that Rhaegar’s connection with Lyanna stemmed from his wish for a son, hoping to fulfill a prophecy about three dragon heads. This prophecy will undoubtedly play a crucial role in the final two books, Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring, and it all begins with Rhaegar. Therefore, any Game of Thrones adaptation focusing on his story would be incredibly significant.
The New Game Of Thrones Project Can Begin To Distinguish Between The Show & Book Ending
A particularly exciting aspect of the new play, Game of Thrones: The Mad King, is that George R.R. Martin is actively involved in its creation. This suggests the play will closely follow the story as Martin originally intended. While Martin has noted some parallels between the play’s planned conclusion and the ending of the HBO series, he also anticipates key differences – Rhaegar’s role being a notable example.
The TV series portrays Daenerys as initially unaware of her brother’s history through visions or the prophecy of the Prince That Was Promised, and even when she learns about it, she doesn’t seem very interested. In contrast, the books show Daenerys understanding the significance of the prophecy and her brother Rhaegar’s research, actively seeking to understand her role in it. This difference suggests the book storyline will unfold differently than the show, though the exact outcome remains to be seen.
With George R.R. Martin involved, the new Game of Thrones: The Mad King project has the potential to clarify some details from the show. It won’t reveal the entire plot of Winds of Winter, but it can establish what details from the TV series won’t appear in Martin’s books. We might finally learn whether Rhaegar and Lyanna were officially married, or if Elia’s son, Aegon, actually survived, as hinted at in the books. Either way, searching for clues in this new Game of Thrones story will be just as enjoyable as ever.
