As a big movie fan, I have to say Brendan Fraser’s new film is totally worth checking out on Hulu. It just dropped on February 18th, and already it’s become one of the most popular movies on the platform – it’s actually at the top of the list for what people are watching in the US right now!
I was really surprised to see this, but Rental Family is currently the most popular movie on Hulu in the US, according to Flix Patrol! It’s beating out some pretty big titles – even Predator: Badlands, Django Unchained, and Brendan Fraser’s The Mummy. And it’s not just a US thing – it’s doing incredibly well in Canada too, landing at number two on Disney+’s movie charts there. It’s a real standout moment for the film!
Premiering last fall at the Toronto International Film Festival, Rental Family stars Oscar winner Brendan Fraser as Phillip Vanderploeg, an American actor who gets hired to play different roles in the lives of people living in Japan. The film also features Takehiro Hira (from Captain America: Brave New World) and Akira Emoto, a winner of the Japanese Academy Award.
Despite a modest start at the box office with $19 million in earnings, the film Rental Family, directed by Hikari, has become a critical success. It currently boasts a 96% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes’ Popcornmeter and a still-strong 87% rating on the Tomatometer, with many praising its heartwarming story and Fraser’s touching performance as Phillip.
Fraser Says The Film Helped Him Develop A Deeper Understanding Of Family
Fraser, who felt fortunate to play Phillip, said the film deepened his understanding of family and the value of reaching out for support. He told Gold Derby that the experience showed him “family is who we choose it to be,” and that a story doesn’t necessarily need a clear villain to be compelling.
He described the movie as ‘a love letter to loneliness, addressed to Tokyo,’ and explained that, in today’s disconnected world, indifference is the real enemy – the villain of the story, as he put it.
He explained that even when things are tough, whether you’re struggling personally or in a difficult situation, you can still grow and improve if you take action and aren’t afraid to ask for help. He admitted it took him a long time to realize he could ask for help, but he eventually did, and it made a difference.
Rental Family is currently streaming on Hulu.
