HBO is creating a new TV series based on the Harry Potter books. Each of the seven books by J.K. Rowling will get its own season.
Filming started in July with Dominic McLaughlin, Alastair Stout, and Arabella Stanton playing Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger. The show is expected to come out in 2027 and will closely follow the original story.
Daniel Radcliffe, best known for playing Harry Potter in the original eight films between 2001 and 2011, recently told PEOPLE he’s talked with his former co-stars, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson, about the new series. They’ve been discussing how strange it feels to see a new generation beginning the same adventure they shared years ago. Radcliffe also mentioned they haven’t spent a lot of time specifically talking about the show itself.
Radcliffe explained that everyone involved seems to instinctively understand each other’s emotions because they’ve all experienced similar feelings. Seeing photos of the young actors makes him want to comfort them, and that’s a feeling he believes they all share. He added that working with this new, young cast has made him reflect on how challenging it was to start filming at age eleven.
You know, when I was 11, I really felt like I had it all figured out. I thought, ‘I’m the oldest I’ll ever be, so naturally I can handle this!’ But now, meeting kids that age? It totally blows my mind how young they are! It really makes you think about how much things change and puts everything into perspective, you know?
Radcliffe shared that he deeply admires his parents, and he’s told them so, for how they helped him through a really difficult time with a lot of humor. He acknowledged it was a huge thing for them to do.
HBO will debut its Harry Potter television adaptation in 2027.
