HBO plans to continue expanding the world of Game of Thrones for years to come, and one new spin-off aims to run for over three decades. However, there’s a potential challenge. Following the conclusion of Game of Thrones, HBO released House of the Dragon, which proved that audiences are still interested in the stories of Westeros, even after the original series’ controversial ending.
The new show, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, proves the Game of Thrones universe can still surprise us with both life and death, and even explore different styles of storytelling. Unlike other Game of Thrones series, it’s intentionally aiming for a different feel with a planned, ongoing storyline. However, it’s facing one major challenge.
A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms’ 30-Year Plan Could Impact Its Audience
Ira Parker, the showrunner for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, has expressed his desire to create 12 to 15 seasons of the Game of Thrones spinoff. He envisions the show unfolding in real time, with three groups of 4-5 seasons each, spaced out over 30 years with 10-year breaks between them. This would be a significant and lengthy project.
Although it’s appealing to revisit the world of Westeros with engaging characters like Dunk and Egg for decades to come, there’s a significant challenge for the Game of Thrones spinoff. HBO risks losing viewers if there are long gaps – around ten years – between releases of new seasons.
The final season of Game of Thrones disappointed many viewers. While House of the Dragon started strong with a highly praised first season, its second season received mixed reactions and fewer people watched. Warner Bros. Discovery reported (via Variety) that the season 2 finale of House of the Dragon drew 8.9 million viewers, down from 9.3 million for the season 1 finale. Even small declines in viewership can add up significantly over time, like over a decade.
Why The Game Of Thrones Spinoff Is In A Complicated Position
Despite the potential risks, I think we should proceed with Ira Parker’s plan for a 12-15 season run of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. There are two main reasons why. First, if we don’t want to wait a decade between season releases, the Game of Thrones spin-off would need to be set earlier in the lives of Dunk and Egg.
Instead of recasting Egg, the show could address the aging of the character. Events like the Tragedy of Summerhall, where Egg was 59 years old, would require a new, older actor to play him. However, given how popular Dexter Sol Ansell is in the role and his strong on-screen connection with the actor playing Dunk, replacing him would be a significant loss. Therefore, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms should attempt to find a way to manage the time jump without changing actors.
