As a huge Family Guy fan, I was so excited for the Season 24 premiere – and it didn’t disappoint! Not only was it the show’s 450th episode, but it also featured what I think was the most touching conversation ever between Lois and Stewie. And, true to Family Guy form, it happened in a completely wild situation! It’s so interesting to hear showrunners Rich Appel and Alec Sulkin talk about how they came up with such a bizarre, yet impactful, episode.
Family Guy Season 24 premiere originally had Stewie smoke pot with Peter
I just read that the creators of Family Guy have been wanting to do an episode where Lois and Stewie have a conversation while high for a really long time, and they finally did it! They told TV Insider it was something they’d planned for ages.
We aim to make each episode both funny and memorable. When planning a season premiere, like our 450th episode, we choose from a selection of episodes. Rich and I immediately loved the outline for this particular one, and it really turned out well. Our writer, Travis Bowe, did a fantastic job bringing it to life, as Sulkin explained.
In the first episode of Family Guy’s 24th season, called “The Edible Arrangement,” Stewie accidentally eats Brian’s marijuana gummies and then secretly puts some in Lois’s wine. This leads to a surprisingly heartfelt and open conversation between them. However, once the effects of the gummies wear off, both Lois and Stewie completely forget what they shared.
Seth MacFarlane shared that the original plan for Family Guy involved Stewie having a rambling conversation with Peter, rather than Lois.
Initially, the idea for a storyline was simply to have Peter and Stewie share a hallucinogenic experience and go on an adventure together – it seemed like it could be amusing. However, the writers soon realized that Stewie’s most compelling emotional connection was with his mother, whom he’s always wanted to harm. They believed a conversation between Stewie and his mother would be not only funny, but also more emotionally resonant and meaningful than a storyline involving Peter.
