Jason Momoa Reveals A Minecraft Movie 2’s Production Window

Jason Momoa has announced when filming will begin for the sequel to the Minecraft movie, officially confirming the start of production. The follow-up film was reported to be in the works as early as April 2025, coinciding with the release of the first movie.

A follow-up to the film was officially announced several months later, with plans to release it in Summer 2027. Both this new movie and the original are inspired by the well-known sandbox video game, also called Minecraft, created by Mojang Studios.

Jason Momoa reveals when A Minecraft Movie 2 begins filming

Jason Momoa shared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon that a sequel to the Minecraft movie is planned and expected to begin filming in late April 2026.

Jason Momoa, known for his role as Aquaman, shared his enthusiastic reaction to the new script, saying it was a significant improvement over the first film, which he found confusing. He described the script as hilarious, adding that it was the first time in a long time he’d genuinely laughed while reading one.

A second Minecraft movie is coming to theaters on July 23, 2027. Jared Hess, the director of the first film, will return to direct. He’ll also be co-writing the script with Chris Galletta, who previously co-wrote the first movie with a team of writers.

Legendary Pictures, the studio behind the original movie, is returning to produce and fund the new film. Joining them as producers are Mary Parent, Cale Boyter, Jason Momoa, Roy Lee, Eric McLeod, Kayleen Walters, and Torfi Frans Ólaffson.

I’m really excited to hear Jason Momoa is coming back as Garrett, or “The Garbage Man” as we all know him! And it sounds like Jack Black will be back as Steve, which is fantastic. But honestly, I’m still waiting to find out if the rest of the original crew – Emma Meyers, Danielle Brooks, Sebastian Hansen, and the hilarious Jennifer Coolidge – will be joining them. Fingers crossed they all return!

When Warner Bros. announced a sequel, they kept details under wraps, saying they would share more information later (according to Variety). But producer Dan Lin recently told Deadline the story might center on Steve and Alex, the new character briefly shown at the end of the first movie.
