‘Marty Supreme’ Director Reveals Movie’s Shockingly Supernatural Scrapped Ending: “We Built the Prosthetic & Everything”

Josh Safdie, director of Timothée Chalamet’s film Marty Supreme, shared his initial idea for the ending: vampires! While unusual, this strange twist aligned with his vision of Marty confronting his rival until the very last moment. However, A24 wasn’t on board, and the film ultimately concluded with a poignant scene showing the main character reflecting on life’s cyclical nature. It’s still fascinating to learn that a horror element was once considered for the finale.

Director Josh Safdie recently appeared on the A24 Podcast with his fellow filmmaker Sean Baker (known for Anora) to talk about Marty Supreme. The conversation turned to the film’s surprising ending, sparked by a discussion about casting Kevin O’Leary—better known as Mr. Wonderful from Shark Tank—in a role as a successful businessman. The character is quite different from O’Leary’s persona on the reality TV show.

In the film, Marty’s main opponent is Milton Rockwell, a cold and unforgiving executive who constantly belittles the skilled table tennis player. During one of their encounters, Rockwell dramatically tells Marty, “I was born in 1601. I’m a vampire. I’ve been around forever.” This isn’t meant to be taken seriously; Rockwell is simply trying to demonstrate his power over Marty. Interestingly, this line echoes a supernatural element originally planned for the film’s ending, though it may just be a playful coincidence.

Safdie explains that the original plan called for Rockwell’s character to confront Marty during a concert with his granddaughter, creating a dramatic finale.

The scene showed Timmy, who we’d created a prosthetic for, with someone looking at him. Then, a character called Mr. Wonderful unexpectedly attacked him from behind, biting his neck – and that was how the movie ended. Remarkably, Mr. Wonderful hasn’t shown any signs of aging.

Looking back at the performances of 2025, there was a wealth of talent on display, and several actors truly deserve Oscar consideration. The women really shone – Jennifer Lawrence in Die My Love, Jessie Buckley in Hamnet, and Sally Hawkins in Bring Her Back all delivered incredibly compelling work. On the male side, Joel Edgerton in Train Dreams, Michael B. Jordan in Sinners, and Leonardo DiCaprio in One Battle After Another were all standouts. But honestly, the performance everyone is talking about is Timothée Chalamet in Marty Supreme. Many are calling it his best role yet, and it’s generating a serious amount of buzz – and deservedly so.

Timothée Chalamet has already earned awards for playing Marty Mauser, including wins at the Critics Choice and Golden Globe Awards. He’s been nominated for Best Actor at the Oscars before, for his work in films like Call Me By Your Name and A Complete Unknown. Given his recent success, many expect him to be nominated again this year for Marty Supreme, and based on previous award shows, he’s a strong contender to finally win the Oscar.
