Netflix’s New Adaptation Based On Bestselling Novel Dominates Global Charts In Just 4 Days

Netflix’s latest romantic comedy, “People We Meet on Vacation,” is quickly becoming popular around the world. Based on the book by Emily Henry, the story centers on Poppi (Emily Bader) and Alex (Tom Blyth), two best friends since college who always took a big summer trip together. But after ten years, a falling out threatens their friendship, leading to two years of silence and one last vacation to try and fix things.

Just released a few days ago, “People We Meet on Vacation” is already a huge hit on Netflix, topping the global charts. Netflix’s Tudum reports the romantic comedy racked up 17.2 million views in its first week, from January 5th to January 11th. It outperformed other popular titles like “Evil Influencer: The Jodi Hildebrandt Story,” “Me Before You,” “KPop Demon Hunters,” and “Madagascar.”

The new Netflix movie is a hit for a few reasons. Author Emily Henry gained a huge following after her novel, Beach Read, became popular on TikTok – especially the BookTok community. She’s had several bestselling books, including People We Meet on Vacation, which helped build anticipation for the film.

Henry’s first movie was a hit with both critics and viewers. Many reviews highlighted People We Meet on Vacation as a delightful return to traditional romantic comedies, and the chemistry between Blyth and Bader, who played the friends-to-lovers couple, was particularly praised. Currently, the film boasts a 75% rating from critics and a 78% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

The popularity of the People We Meet on Vacation streaming release suggests great things to come for author Emily Henry’s other works being adapted for the screen. Even before this movie came out, adaptations of her novels Beach Read and Book Lovers were already in the works.

Notably, Henry is developing a strong partnership with Netflix. The streaming service recently announced plans to adapt her novels Happy Place and Funny Story, and Henry will be involved in the writing process. She also served as an executive producer on the film People We Meet on Vacation, directed by Brett Haley.
