I’m so excited to see Glen Powell really taking off after Top Gun: Maverick! He’s now the star of a brand new take on Stephen King’s The Running Man, and it’s directed by the amazing Edgar Wright. We finally got to see it in theaters on November 14, 2025 – it was a fantastic action thriller!
I remember being so excited when they announced a new take on this classic story! Arnold Schwarzenegger really made it iconic back in ’87, and with the buzz around the lead actor and the director’s previous successes, everyone at Paramount seemed confident it would be a hit. They clearly believed in it, giving it a substantial $110 million budget. Sadly, despite all that promise, the movie didn’t quite live up to expectations. Critics and audiences were divided, and it didn’t perform at the box office as well as we all hoped it would.
As a movie buff, I was checking out the numbers for The Running Man, and according to Box Office Mojo, it pulled in a solid $68.6 million worldwide. It’s off the big screen now that it’s hit streaming, which is a bit of a shame because a lot of people were predicting it would break some records. It almost did, but just missed out!
The Running Man Wasn’t Stephen King’s Highest Grossing Movie Of 2025 After A Disappointing Performance
Movies based on Stephen King stories haven’t always been successful financially, but Hollywood keeps making them anyway. 2025 was a particularly busy year, with four King adaptations released: The Monkey, The Life of Chuck, The Long Walk, and The Running Man. Of these, the remake directed by Powell was predicted to be the most popular at the box office.
Despite being a strong performer, the film ultimately came in second place at the box office. It narrowly missed becoming King’s highest-grossing movie of 2025, falling just $255,431 short of surpassing The Monkey. It’s worth noting that box office numbers vary – according to The Numbers, The Running Man actually holds the record.
Released in February, The Monkey became a worldwide success, earning over $68.8 million. Its unique blend of comedy and horror, combined with a quiet release schedule, helped it outperform films like The Running Man, despite having a less famous cast. Remarkably, The Monkey achieved this with a modest budget and distribution through Neon.
It’s surprising that The Running Man earned $255,431 less than The Monkey, considering its strong start. While the film, a remake by Powell, initially broke box office records for the director’s movies in 2025, audience interest faded quickly, and it didn’t perform well internationally.
Even with that record, The Running Man wasn’t a financial success. Because it cost more to make, the movie needed to earn around $275 million to be considered a hit. It missed that goal by over $200 million, and would have even if it had barely outperformed The Monkey.
Instead of being Stephen King’s biggest hit of the year, The Running Man didn’t quite live up to expectations. It will be interesting to see how eager Hollywood is to invest big money in adaptations of King’s work going forward, considering this outcome.
