Stieg Larsson’s popular Millennium novels are getting a fresh TV adaptation. While The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo has been adapted before – notably as a 2011 film directed by David Fincher – and other TV versions were planned but never fully realized, fans can now look forward to a new eight-episode miniseries. Sky has announced this version will be a complete reimagining of the story.
This fresh take on The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo updates the story for modern audiences while staying true to the characters and investigative spirit of Stieg Larsson’s original Millennium series. The themes explored feel particularly important and resonant today.
Steven Lightfoot and Angela LaManna are teaming up to write and executive produce a new series based on The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Lightfoot is known for his work as showrunner on the upcoming Spider-Noir series, as well as creating Behind Her Eyes and Marvel’s The Punisher for Netflix. LaManna has also written and executive produced several shows, including Behind Her Eyes and the popular horror series The Haunting of Bly Manor. The series will be produced by Left Bank Pictures in partnership with Sky, and filming is scheduled to begin in Lithuania in Spring 2026. MovieWeb has contacted representatives for further information and will provide updates as they become available.
While a premiere date hasn’t been announced, Sky will distribute the series in the UK, Ireland, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. Sony Pictures Television is in charge of international distribution, and they’re already working to bring the show to viewers in the United States. We can expect more information as production moves forward.
‘The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo’ Always Attracts a Talented Cast

Sony Pictures Releasing
Stieg Larsson’s novel, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, was a huge success and offered actors complex, compelling characters. His creation of Lisbeth Salander, in particular, allowed for powerful and often gritty performances on screen. The Swedish film adaptations, starring Noomi Rapace and Michael Nyqvist, first introduced audiences to Lisbeth in a trilogy released between 2009 and 2010, including The Girl Who Played with Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets’ Nest.
David Fincher’s 2011 film featured Rooney Mara as Lisbeth and Daniel Craig in a supporting role. Although the movie was popular, the planned sequels with those actors never happened. A follow-up film, The Girl in the Spider’s Web, came out in 2018 with Claire Foy as Lisbeth, but it didn’t perform well. Now that American film adaptations have stalled, this new Sky series offers a chance to introduce the Millennium books to a new audience.

Although details about the new The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo series are still under wraps, the casting choices so far look promising. It’s unclear how much the show will differ from the original story, but the team behind it has a history of making successful adaptations, so this version of Larsson’s work could be the best one yet.
