Absolute Green Lantern Just Put a Monstrous Twist on a Classic DC Legacy Hero

A major DC hero has been transformed into a terrifying monster in the Absolute Universe.

In the latest issue of Absolute Green Lantern #10 (from Al Ewing, Sid Kotian, Pressy, and Lucas Gattoni), a new danger arises as Jo Mullein and her team deal with the aftermath of Goldface’s attack. It’s revealed that Hector Hammon has been conducting risky experiments using a strange black substance taken from Hal Jordan, and Todd Rice has become a transformed, powerful being – a new type of Obsidian – as a result.

I first learned about the original Todd Rice way back in 1983, in issue #25 of All-Star Squadron! Roy Thomas and Jerry Ordway created him, and his story is pretty intense. He’s the son of a hero, but also of the villain Thorn, Rose Canton. What’s really sad is that both he and his twin sister, Jade, were given up for adoption, and Todd ended up in a really awful, abusive home. It wasn’t until they found each other as teenagers that they discovered they were family and that they both had superpowers. That’s when their journey to become heroes really began!

Todd Rice, known as Obsidian, is a remarkably powerful hero in the DC Universe who can control shadows and harness darkness. Over the years, he’s become a valuable asset to teams like the Justice Society of America and has been central to major storylines, including the Infinity Clock event.

Hector Hammond is a classic DC villain, often appearing as an enemy of Hal Jordan’s Green Lantern. He first appeared in 1961 and gained powerful psychic abilities after being exposed to a strange meteorite. Combined with his overwhelming greed, this made him a perfect host for the entity Ophidian, leading him to repeatedly threaten the DC Universe.

The Hector Hammond of this universe isn’t directly powerful, but he’s far from helpless. As the leader of Hammond Consulting, he has access to almost unlimited funds and influence, which he used to take control of the area where a Green Lantern’s spaceship crashed on Earth.

Hector Hammond is a highly dangerous villain, ranking among the worst in the Absolute Universe, alongside figures like Veronica Cale and the Joker. He doesn’t fully realize the extent of his threat yet, but he’s certainly one of the most powerful enemies around.
