Sebastian Stan and Scarlett Johansson, both known for their roles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), are now joining a DC project. They’ve both been cast in The Batman Part II. While details about Johansson’s character are still secret – fans are speculating she might play Poison Ivy, Gilda Gold, or Andrea Beaumont – reports suggest Stan will be playing Harvey Dent.
For the last twenty years, Marvel and DC Comics have been incredibly successful at making movies, and as a result, some actors have played roles in films from both universes. A good example is Ben Affleck, who first starred as Daredevil before later becoming Batman.
Zachary Levi
Shazam!, Shazam! Fury of the Gods
You know, I always felt bad for Zachary Levi as Fandral in the Thor films. They brought him in as a friend and ally to Thor, but honestly, he didn’t do much of anything across those three movies. It felt like a waste! Thankfully, DC gave him a much better showcase with Shazam!. He really gets to shine as Billy Batson’s superhero alter ego, and his comedic timing is fantastic. It’s great to see him finally get a role where he can really let loose and be funny.
Mikaela Hoover
The Suicide Squad, Superman
Director James Gunn has consistently given Mikaela Hoover increasingly prominent roles in his movies. She started as Nova Prime’s assistant in Guardians of the Galaxy, then played Camila in The Suicide Squad. More recently, she portrayed Floor the Rabbit in the emotional flashback sequences of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and Cat Grant in Superman.
Florence Kasumba
Wonder Woman
Florence Kasumba’s character, Ayo, has appeared in several major Marvel Cinematic Universe projects, including the Black Panther films, large crossover events, and the series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, making her a surprisingly frequent presence in the MCU. Kasumba is also known for playing Senator Acantha in Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman.
Steve Agee
The Suicide Squad, Shazam! Fury of the Gods
Before casting Steve Agee as John Economos (also known as “Ginger Cool”) in the DC Universe, James Gunn previously worked with him in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Agee had a smaller role in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, playing a member of Yondu’s Ravager crew named Gef.
Stephen Blackehart
Superman
Many of the actors here frequently work with James Gunn, and he’s brought them with him as he’s moved between Marvel and DC projects. Stephen Blackehart is a great example: he appeared in various roles in the Guardians of the Galaxy films – as the Knowhere dispatcher, Brahl, and Steemie – and then played Sydney Happersen, an associate of Otis and LuthorCorp, in Superman.
David Harbour
Suicide Squad
David Harbour became a well-known actor thanks to his role in Stranger Things, which eventually led to him being cast as Red Guardian in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, before Stranger Things launched his career, he had a small role as Dexter Tolliver in Suicide Squad.
Kenneth Choi
Suicide Squad
Kenneth Choi has a unique connection within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He first appeared in Captain America: The First Avenger as Jim Morita, and later returned in Spider-Man: Homecoming playing the role of Jim Morita’s grandson, a school principal. Beyond Marvel, he also had a brief appearance as a yakuza boss in Suicide Squad.
Daniela Melchior
The Suicide Squad
Daniela Melchior first gained widespread recognition for her performance as Ratcatcher 2 in The Suicide Squad. Director James Gunn was so impressed that he later cast her in a small role—as the alien receptionist Ura, who is captivated by Peter Quill—in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
Frank Grillo
Superman
Frank Grillo first appeared as Brock Rumlow in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, later reprising the role as the villain Crossbones in Civil War. He made a brief appearance as a different version of Rumlow in Avengers: Endgame. More recently, Grillo has taken on a significant role as Rick Flag, Sr. in the new DC Universe.
Chris Evans
The Losers
Before becoming Captain America and leading the Avengers, Chris Evans had a role in a lesser-known DC Comics film called The Losers. Based on a comic from DC’s Vertigo line, it’s a movie that many consider to be a hidden treasure.
