After a slow year for her films in 2025, the R-rated thriller is proving to be a major success for the actress, potentially becoming her biggest hit since 2023’s Anyone but You. The film, directed by Paul Feig and also starring Amanda Seyfried, is exceeding expectations and could earn over $200 million, possibly surpassing the box office results of Feig’s previous film with Jason Statham.
Although it’s now looking difficult for The Housemaid to surpass the 2015 comedy thriller – which remains Jason Statham’s highest-rated film on Rotten Tomatoes – there was a time when it seemed the movie might not do well at the box office. This was due to recent unsuccessful films starring Sweeney and the release of Avatar: Fire and Ash in December 2025, which was expected to dominate cinemas.
Instead, The Housemaid was a hit for viewers wanting something more suspenseful than the visually impressive Avatar. It also marked a turning point for director Sweeney, whose previous three films – Americana, Eden, and Christy – had all failed at the box office. Despite a small $35 million budget, The Housemaid has already earned over $140 million globally, and many predict it could reach $200 million or more.
If these early numbers are accurate, this could be one of Sweeney’s most successful projects yet, and a major victory for Lionsgate and director Feig. His previous big-budget film, the 2016 Ghostbusters reboot, received a lot of mixed reactions.
Sydney Sweeney Can Bounce Back from Her 2025 Nightmare

I’ve seen a lot of actors go through rough patches at the box office, but what happened to Sydney Sweeney in 2025 was pretty shocking. While her indie film, Americana, was always a small project with limited promotion, it was the release of Eden – a bigger thriller with stars like Jude Law and Ana de Armas alongside her – that really showed how tough things have been for movies in theaters lately. It just didn’t seem to connect with audiences, and it was a clear sign of the challenges the industry is facing.
The movie initially struggled in theaters, experiencing one of the worst opening weekends ever, despite strong Oscar predictions for Sweeney’s performance as boxer Christy Martin. While it has since found success on streaming platforms, it hasn’t fully overcome that initial disappointment. Like another film called Eden, it failed to live up to expectations.

Even after recent online criticism, particularly regarding a jeans ad, Sydney Sweeney appears poised for a strong comeback in 2026. The third season of Euphoria is finally scheduled to premiere, and she’s confirmed to star in a live-action Gundam movie. Plus, there are reports she’ll portray Kim Novak in the drama Scandalous and appear in The Devil Wears Prada 2. While her future projects are uncertain, Sweeney remains a popular figure – she was IMDb’s sixth most popular star in 2025, even with some recent box office disappointments – and doesn’t seem to be losing momentum.
