Lucasfilm Reverses Course, Suspends Future MandoVerse Plans (Report)

A recent report indicates that Lucasfilm is changing its plans for the future of its Star Wars universe, often called the ‘MandoVerse.’ For over six years, since the first season of The Mandalorian premiered in 2019, Lucasfilm has been primarily focused on developing stories that fill in the gap between Return of the Jedi (Episode VI) and The Force Awakens (Episode VII).

So far, the ‘MandoVerse’ includes three seasons of The Mandalorian, the Book of Boba Fett series, Skeleton Crew, the first season of Ahsoka, and the upcoming The Mandalorian & Grogu movie. This connected universe has been a key focus for Lucasfilm since the Skywalker Saga finished, but it may be time for the stories to evolve and move in new directions.

Star Wars insider Daniel Richtman reports that Lucasfilm is thinking about shifting focus away from the interconnected shows and stories of ‘The Mandalorian’ universe. In a recent Patreon post, Richtman stated that currently, no further projects are planned beyond the second season of the upcoming ‘Ahsoka’ series. Lucasfilm is holding off on making any new commitments until they see how well ‘Ahsoka,’ starring Rosario Dawson, performs with audiences.

Lately, the world of ‘The Mandalorian’ and its related shows have been central to Lucasfilm’s storytelling for Star Wars. After the conclusion of the Skywalker Saga, Pedro Pascal’s character, the bounty hunter Din Djarin, stepped forward to lead the franchise in a new direction.

There’s been a lot of discussion about the future of the interconnected stories from The Mandalorian. For a while, the plan was to wrap up this storyline with a movie directed by Dave Filoni, one of the creators of The Mandalorian. This was before Lucasfilm officially announced films like The Mandalorian & Grogu.

Currently, the only two Star Wars projects still in development are The Mandalorian & Grogu and Ahsoka. Season 2 of Ahsoka is expected in 2026, but recent reports indicate it might be pushed back.

What Does the Future of the MandoVerse Look Like?

As a huge Star Wars fan, it’s honestly a little shocking to hear rumors that Lucasfilm might be shifting away from the world of ‘The Mandalorian’ and all its spin-offs. It feels like those shows have been carrying the franchise for years, so it’s hard to imagine them moving on from that universe!

The future of Star Wars storytelling has kept fans excited since the last film. With a new movie on the way this year, and another planned for 2027, the era of shows connected to ‘The Mandalorian’ might be coming to an end.

Several Star Wars projects for Disney+, like Ahsoka and Skeleton Crew, were previously announced as part of a larger connected storyline (often called the MandoVerse). However, the future of those shows now looks uncertain. Currently, Ahsoka Season 2 is the only confirmed streaming series still planned for this era of Star Wars, and it appears to be the last live-action Star Wars series Lucasfilm has scheduled for streaming, overall.

Following the success of The Mandalorian, which moved from being a major streaming series to a popular blockbuster film, Lucasfilm seems to be shifting its attention back to releasing films in theaters instead of primarily focusing on Disney+.

This suggests that any future MandoVerse projects might appear in movie theaters instead of on streaming services. According to Daniel Richtman, Lucasfilm is currently waiting to see how well Season 2 of Ahsoka performs before making any decisions.

If the streaming shows don’t become popular, the studio might end the ‘MandoVerse’ on streaming platforms. However, if The Mandalorian & Grogu is successful, the studio could shift the focus to theatrical releases, exploring sequels to the hit movie instead of continuing with a TV series.
