Disney’s upcoming live-action film faced a setback when a key actress left the project. There were concerns it might be cancelled, but now it appears production is simply delayed while they search for a new actress to take on the role of Mother Gothel.
As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Scarlett Johansson will no longer be playing the villain in the upcoming live-action Rapunzel movie. She was originally cast as Mother Gothel, the character who imprisons Rapunzel and exploits her magical hair to stay young. However, due to her commitments to other projects, including leading roles in Mike Flanagan’s The Exorcist and Matt Reeves’ The Batman Part II, she’s had to withdraw from the film.
Disney is searching for an actress to play Rapunzel in its upcoming live-action film. Several actresses are reportedly being considered, including Freya Skye (known for Zombies 4: Dawn of the Vampires), Sarah Catherine Hook (The White Lotus), Teagan Croft (Titans), and Olivia-Mai Barrett (Invasion).
Disney Has Had ‘Tangled’ Tied Up in Knots

I remember back in 2023, everyone started talking about Disney potentially making a live-action version of Tangled. Zachary Levi, who voiced Flynn Rider and is known for Shazam!, even threw his hat in the ring, saying he’d love to play the part again! Florence Pugh was suggested as Rapunzel, which sounded amazing. But honestly, it quickly became clear that version just wasn’t going to happen, and never really had a chance.
There was a lot of buzz about who would direct the movie back then. I remember hearing Disney really wanted Baz Luhrmann – the guy behind Elvis and Moulin Rouge – to take the helm. But by December 2024, they’d actually gone with Michael Gracey instead. He’s the director who gave us that wonderfully weird Robbie Williams biopic, Better Man, so I figured it was in good hands!
The film was reportedly cancelled after Snow White didn’t do well in cinemas, but Disney revived the project when Lilo & Stitch became a huge hit. It now appears Scarlett Johansson may no longer be involved, which could mean Disney will revisit their initial idea of casting Kathryn Hahn, known for Agatha All Along, as Mother Gothel – a choice fans had previously supported when she was first considered for the part a year ago.

Although Tangled is still a ways off from hitting theaters, and will likely require a lot of computer-generated imagery like other Disney live-action films, it probably won’t be released for at least two years. This year, Disney will gauge audience interest in live-action remakes again with the summer release of Moana.
