Filming for the new Marvel movie, Avengers: Doomsday, finished earlier this year. The production brought together a large cast of characters from past Marvel films, and notably, Robert Downey Jr. is back – but this time as the villain Doctor Doom. Simu Liu recently shared what it’s like working with Downey Jr., who is apparently being given star treatment on set, even creating a private area nicknamed “Downey Land.”
Liu recently discussed Avengers: Doomsday with Collider, talking about joining the massive crossover event and what it was like to be part of such a huge film. He shared stories about meeting Robert Downey Jr. on set and being invited into the tent Downey Jr. had created as a central hub for his entire team.
Robert Downey Jr. was known for having a huge setup on set – a whole collection of trailers and a base camp area that everyone jokingly called ‘Downey Land.’ I remember the first time I was invited there. I walked into this tent and it was filled with amazing artwork, similar to Andy Warhol’s style, but all the images were of Robert Downey Jr. himself! It really showed how aware he is of his own public persona.
He welcomed me, and I was surprised to learn Downey Land had its own chefs. I’d already packed my lunch, but he politely told me it wasn’t necessary. The chefs then prepared a complete buffet, and I quickly put my packed lunch aside. Seeing everyone walking by, I was amazed to be sharing a meal with such incredible people.
Simu Liu, who first played Shang-Chi in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, will return to the role in Avengers: Doomsday. This film will feature a massive cast, and Liu recently shared how exciting it was to meet Robert Downey Jr. on set for the first time, calling it a surreal experience.
You know, the really surreal moments didn’t happen while we were actually filming. Everyone gets so focused when the cameras are rolling and we’re in character. For me, the biggest challenge was shutting down my inner fanboy. I really had to separate those feelings. It sounds silly, but I kept telling myself I needed to treat these actors as colleagues, as equals, even though inside I was totally starstruck – like a kid in a candy store!
I experienced a lot of unforgettable moments, and meeting Robert Downey Jr. for the first time was definitely one of them. It was surreal because I’d met most of the people around him previously, but never him directly. It felt right that we finally connected, especially since we were about to work together. I told him how much I admired his work, and he was incredibly kind in return. That was the first of many special experiences.
‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Is Going To Be Huge
