When the series starts, very few people know what the Great Prophecy says – only the gods, the Titans, Luke, and Chiron. Annabeth eventually finds out too, but the books don’t clearly show exactly when she learns about it.

The phrase “half-blood of the eldest gods” describes a child born to one of the three most powerful gods – Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades. Long ago, these gods promised to never have any more children with humans, because they knew such powerful offspring could cause chaos. But a prophecy predicted that one of them would break this promise. The next child of these gods to turn sixteen would face a critical decision that could either doom or protect Olympus.

Thalia’s return gives Zeus a small hope that his demigod son might not be the one destined by the Great Prophecy. However, the discovery of two children of Hades in The Titan’s Curse suggests a darker outcome: Percy could die before his sixteenth birthday, and one of these new demigods would then fulfill the prophecy instead.

The rest of the prophecy relates to the events in The Last Olympian and contains significant spoilers best explored separately. Essentially, the remaining lines hint at deaths and hardship, while also concealing important details about who they involve. Crucially, this major prophecy, known as the Great Prophecy, creates tension throughout the final three Percy Jackson books. It’s really frustrating being Percy Jackson right now. This Great Prophecy is causing so much trouble, and the gods just won’t tell me everything I need to know!
