Misha Collins, who played Castiel on Supernatural, recently discussed an episode at CCXP that he’d like to see re-done. He feels a key decision made for his character – and Dean Winchester’s – was controversial. While Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki played the main characters, Castiel became a hugely popular figure, making his storyline’s ending particularly sensitive for fans.
In the fifteenth season of Supernatural, episode 18 marked the last appearance of the character Castiel. Misha Collins, the actor who played him, believes it was a mistake to not include Castiel more prominently in the show’s final episode, “Carry On.” At CCXP, Collins shared that he would like to reshoot the episode with a greater focus on his character.
The finale of Supernatural sparked a lot of debate, especially regarding Dean’s death. However, many fans were also upset that Castiel wasn’t included in the final episode. Beyond just wanting to see him one last time, viewers felt the ending didn’t properly honor the ten years of history between Dean and Castiel’s characters.
The final scene between Dean and Castiel isn’t a joyful reunion. Instead, Castiel is taken by the Empty—appearing to be a permanent loss—and confesses his love to Dean, who doesn’t say anything in return. Dean then collapses and begins to cry. The actor who played Castiel, Misha Collins, has spoken about this scene before, sharing his thoughts on it.
The season finale revealed that Castiel had indeed escaped the Empty, with Jack having rescued him, offering some relief to fans worried about his fate. However, this also frustrated some viewers – possibly including actor Misha Collins – because Castiel wasn’t physically present in the episode itself.
The decision to alter the show’s ending was partly due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Originally, the finale was designed to bring back many fan-favorite characters from the show’s 15 seasons, including Castiel. Unfortunately, pandemic restrictions made that impossible, and Dean and Castiel weren’t able to share a final scene together.
It’s understandable that Collins would want a remake of this episode, perhaps showing Castiel and Dean reunited in Heaven. However, that’s not the only idea fans have. Ever since the show ended, many have hoped for a season 16 of Supernatural, and seeing Cas and Dean together is probably a top request from viewers.
It’s still uncertain if the show will ever be revived, but Misha Collins is right to suggest the Supernatural finale should be reworked. A better focus on Castiel – or even including him at all – would have improved the ending.
