Netflix Western The Abandons Rotten Tomatoes Score Revealed

Kurt Sutter’s new show, The Abandons, isn’t quite the hit that Sons of Anarchy was. Despite excitement about the return of the co-creator of Mayans M.C., critics haven’t been impressed, giving the Netflix western a lukewarm 50% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The new show, starring Lena Headey (from Game of Thrones) and Gillian Anderson (The X-Files), focuses on two determined women fighting for control in the rough and tumble Washington Territory of the 1850s. However, despite this premise, it hasn’t been well-received by audiences or critics. Nick Schager of The Daily Beast even criticized it as a weaker imitation of Yellowstone.

According to critic Matt Schager, Kurt Sutter’s series feels fake and relies too heavily on tired tropes, lacking genuine feeling, flow, or new ideas. While Yellowstone’s writing isn’t perfect, Taylor Sheridan at least understands how to create a strong reaction. In contrast, The Abandons offers no deeper insight beyond the harsh realities of pre-Civil War America, where family and land ownership were the only priorities. Schager predicts this lack of originality means most viewers won’t be interested in seeing where the story goes.

Judy Berman of Time magazine was equally critical of Sutter’s new show. She called The Abandons “everything wrong with TV in 2025,” while praising Lena Headey’s acting. However, Berman strongly criticized the series for its forgettable characters and predictable, cliché-filled Western plot that feels overly familiar.

According to one reviewer, the new series The Abandons, which premiered on Thursday, perfectly captures everything currently irritating about television. She described it as a prime example of the medium’s frustrations.

These Scathing Reviews Come More Than A Year After Sutter Left The Series

Kurt Sutter seemed to be deeply invested in the show. He unexpectedly left The Abandons just weeks before filming was set to finish in Calgary in October 2024. While Sutter didn’t publicly explain his departure, insiders told Variety that disagreements with Netflix over the show’s creative direction led to his decision.

According to reports, the streaming service reviewed an early version of the first episodes and decided the initial installment – almost an hour and 40 minutes long – should be split into two parts, requiring additional filming. Following creator Bart Sutter’s exit, Otto Bathurst and Rob Askins took over production. Filming for The Abandons took place from May to October 2024, after being delayed from its original 2023 start date due to labor strikes.

The Abandons‘ first season is currently available to stream on Netflix.
