Scarlett Johansson Stands By Woody Allen Amid Controversy

Scarlett Johansson has spoken out in defense of her ongoing support for Woody Allen, emphasizing the importance of staying true to her own beliefs. She previously appeared in three of his films – Match Point (2005), Scoop (2006), and Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008).

I remember back in 1992, Woody Allen faced a really serious accusation from Mia Farrow, his ex-partner. She claimed he’d abused their adopted daughter, Dylan. It was all over the news, but he was never charged with a crime and always said it wasn’t true. The New York Department of Social Services actually looked into it and ended up dismissing the claims.

The accusation against Allen reappeared after Harvey Weinstein’s scandal and the growth of the #MeToo movement. This led many of Allen’s former colleagues to publicly condemn him regarding the old and contested allegations of child abuse, though a few, like Johansson, continued to support him.

Scarlett Johansson recently spoke to The Telegraph to address the criticism she’s received for continuing to work with Woody Allen. She was asked if her support for him had led to any professional or personal consequences, like losing job opportunities or friendships. Here’s what she said:

You know, it’s tough to say what the full impact of any decision will be – things have a way of rippling outwards. But this film really resonated with me because of its strong message about staying true to yourself. It’s a reminder, thanks to a mother’s influence in the story, that having integrity and standing up for what you believe in are incredibly important – and that’s a message I think we all need to hear.

It’s also important to recognize when it’s best to listen rather than speak. This doesn’t mean you should never share your thoughts, but sometimes the moment isn’t right. I’ve learned this lesson more as I’ve gotten older.

When the #MeToo movement gained prominence, most of Woody Allen’s past colleagues publicly criticized him. However, a small number, including Scarlett Johansson and Diane Keaton, continued to support him. In 2019, Johansson explained her position in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, stating:

I have a lot of respect for Woody and trust him completely – I’d gladly collaborate with him again. We talk often, and I’ve been very open and honest with him, as he has been with me. He insists he did nothing wrong, and I believe him.

From 1980 to 1992, Woody Allen and Mia Farrow were in a relationship, both personally and professionally, collaborating on 13 movies. The relationship ended in 1991 when Allen began dating Soon-Yi Previn, who was then the 21-year-old adopted daughter of Farrow and André Previn. Allen and Previn later married in 1997 and have since adopted two children together.

Meanwhile, Scarlett Johansson recently directed her first film, a drama called Eleanor the Great, featuring June Squibb as the main character.
