Michelle Monaghan has been a working actress for more than twenty years, becoming well-known for her action roles in the Mission: Impossible films. She recently shared why her hit Apple TV comedy series means so much to her.

I recently caught up with Michelle Monaghan, and we chatted about her hit action comedy with Mark Wahlberg, which absolutely crushed it when it came out in December 2023. Now, two years later, they’ve released a sequel, and Monaghan told me what makes these films so meaningful to her – she gets to share them with her kids! It’s a sweet thought, and honestly, adds another layer of enjoyment knowing that personal connection.

When The Family Plan launched on Apple TV in 2023, it quickly became the most-watched movie on the platform. While it didn’t hold that top spot for long, the lead actress was happily surprised by how well the film was received.

She immediately recognized the script’s potential, saying it had a special quality. The writing was excellent, thanks to David Coggeshall, and Simon Cellan Jones was a fantastic director. With Mark on board, the story felt very authentic and reminded her of classic family films, a type of movie that’s become rare. She was confident it would appeal to audiences of all ages.

The actress also talked about what made this experience meaningful for her. As a mom to a teenager and a pre-teen, she explained that her family often has trouble picking a movie everyone will enjoy. They can usually agree on watching a movie together on a Sunday, but actually choosing one ends up taking a long time – sometimes a full hour of searching and debating!

I’ve worked on many projects throughout my career, but very few are suitable for my kids. The Family Plan was special because I could finally share something I created with them right away. I loved being able to say, ‘Here’s a movie I made, and we can all enjoy it together now!’

Michelle Monaghan Wants a Family Plan Trilogy

I remember when the first movie came out – everyone seemed to love it, even if the critics weren’t blown away. The Family Plan is getting pretty slammed by critics right now, with only a 29% rating, but audiences are a bit more forgiving, giving it a 60%. Unfortunately, the sequel isn’t doing much better. Both critics and viewers seem pretty lukewarm on it, with scores of just 38% and 36% respectively.

Despite everything, the movie is currently a huge success, topping the charts. Monaghan also shared that she and the team would be thrilled to make a third film. “We’re all eager to create Family Plan 3. It’s a successful series with a fantastic team, and audiences clearly enjoy it.”
