The creators, the Duffer brothers, acknowledge that this episode didn’t quite meet viewers’ expectations. As Matt Duffer explained to Variety:

We were filming the second season very quickly, rushing to meet a Halloween release date. The initial script didn’t work as we’d hoped, and we only had a week left to revise it. Looking back, I don’t think we ever fully fixed the issues, and I always felt bad about that for Linnea. However, we really liked working with Linnea, so we decided to bring her back for another season. I think she’s fantastic, and I’m really pleased with how she turned out.

Bringing Kali back into the story created new possibilities. According to Ross Duffer, they wanted to give her a meaningful moment, but not just for the sake of it. As they developed the season, they realized Kali’s return was crucial for resolving Eleven’s storyline and tying up loose ends. It wasn’t simply about avoiding an unresolved plot point; it served a real purpose in Eleven’s arc.
