Apple TV’s Record-Breaking Sci-Fi Quietly Featured a Better Call Saul Reunion

I was completely surprised to learn that when Rhea Seehorn’s character, Carol, contacted the Others on this week’s episode, it was actually Patrick Fabian on the other end of the line! It was such a fun twist, especially knowing they’d already shared the screen together on Better Call Saul. I loved that little connection!

Right after the fifth episode of Pluribus aired on Apple TV+ Tuesday night, actress Seehorn revealed the identity of the actor playing the mysterious character: it was Howard Hamlin’s actor! She said she didn’t find out until she was actually filming the scene. “They kept it a surprise,” Seehorn explained, recalling how she didn’t recognize the voice of the TV lawyer until she heard it during the take. “I had no idea.”

Michael McKean’s surprised reaction to the unexpected appearance of Anna Gunn in Better Call Saul was intentional. According to the show’s creator, Vince Gilligan, and members of the production team – many of whom also worked on Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul – they secretly planned her cameo hoping to capture McKean’s genuine reaction on camera.

Seehorn remembered they were playfully trying to catch her making a mistake. She said she really focused on not messing up her lines, especially because it was a long scene and the first time her character was hearing the information. She clarified she wasn’t necessarily terrified, just very determined to get it right.

Seehorn isn’t sure if the scene made it into the final episode, possibly because it aired around Thanksgiving. However, even her skilled acting couldn’t completely hide how surprised she was.

I believe a specialist who studies tiny facial movements could detect my surprise when someone said, ‘What? Patrick?’ But I quickly tried to hide my reaction and continue acting. As soon as the director yelled ‘cut,’ though, I let my guard down completely.

As soon as they yelled ‘cut,’ I burst out laughing and ran over, exclaiming, ‘That’s Patrick! You got Patrick!’ Apparently, they’d been planning that moment for a while just to playfully mess with me.

All Easter Eggs Aside, Seehorn Says Fabian Has A Voice For Voicemail

Besides creating an enjoyable moment for fans of Better Call Saul, Seehorn explained that Fabian was a perfect choice to record the voicemail message left by the Other after the group temporarily left Albuquerque. This happened because Carol tried to drug Zosia to get information about reversing “the Joining.”

Anna Seehorn jokingly admitted that even without the connection to Better Call Saul, Patrick Fabian has an incredibly calming voice – the kind she imagines would be perfect for a recorded message, and that the mysterious ‘Others’ from the show would definitely approve of. She said she completely understood why he was chosen for the role.
