Some games seem perfectly suited for subscription services like PlayStation Plus. Games that are regularly updated benefit from being easily accessible, attracting more players. Indie games can also gain funding and reach a larger audience this way. A game like LEGO Horizon Adventures, for example, might have made more sense as a free addition for PlayStation Plus subscribers at launch.
PlayStation Plus subscribers will get access to LEGO Horizon Adventures in December at no extra cost. The game becomes available for download on December 2nd, alongside other titles like Killing Floor 3, The Outlast Trials, Synduality: Echo of Ada, and Neon White. Released about a year ago, LEGO Horizon Adventures now feels like a perfect fit for the PlayStation Plus library.
LEGO Horizon Adventures Should Have Been A Day-One PS Plus Release
The announcement of LEGO Horizon Adventures came as a surprise to many, but it makes sense when you think about it. The Horizon games are hugely popular, and the robotic creatures in those games are already built with parts that fit well with LEGO’s brick style.
Okay, so I was really excited for LEGO Horizon Adventures, but the $60 price tag immediately threw me off. Look, a lot of us adults love LEGO games, but let’s be real, most LEGO players are kids. And kids these days are used to free games like Roblox and Fortnite – even Fortnite has LEGO-style stuff in it! Charging full price for this LEGO game puts it at a big disadvantage, because those free games are what kids are playing now.
It was clear from the start that $60 was too expensive for LEGO Horizon Adventures. The game is relatively short, taking around 10 hours to complete at a relaxed pace. While game length isn’t always a deciding factor in price, players generally don’t anticipate revolutionary or unique gameplay from LEGO games.
Sony released LEGO Horizon Adventures on multiple platforms – PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and PC – at the same time. However, the game likely would have been more popular if it had been available to PlayStation Plus subscribers on day one, perhaps as part of the Extra or Premium tiers’ game library. Offering it as a free benefit with a subscription could have significantly improved how players viewed the game.
LEGO Horizon Adventures Is A Perfect PlayStation Plus Game
Rather than being sold as a small, expensive game, LEGO Horizon Adventures would have worked well as a free bonus for PlayStation Plus subscribers. It could have been a first-party title offered at no extra cost, while still being available to purchase on other platforms – and at a more reasonable price. While a LEGO version of Horizon likely wouldn’t have generated as much excitement as the next Forbidden West game, launching it directly on PS Plus would have encouraged more people to give it a try.
While adding LEGO Horizon Adventures to PS Plus won’t change its review scores, it’s a smart move for Sony to offer the game to subscribers as a free perk. The game is best enjoyed with friends, and making it available through PlayStation Plus will likely attract players who weren’t interested in buying it at its original, higher price.
