Though his character, Vince, died in last season’s finale of Fire Country, Billy Burke will appear in this week’s episode. CBS surprised viewers by killing off Vince, a main character on the popular show, and while the writers say it was to move the story forward, some fans are still questioning the decision.
The death of the Leone family’s leader happened during a dangerous rescue attempt – he tried to save his father from a fire at his workplace. Though his father, Walter, survived, the son did not, leaving Sharon a widow and the Edgewater fire department without its Battalion Chief. The fourth season of Fire Country began with his funeral, and his loss has been a central theme ever since, impacting everyone who knew him as they try to cope. This week’s episode, however, offers a surprising twist by bringing back Vince, though not without a catch.
CBS Is Rerunning Fire Country Season 3 Episodes This Week
CBS will be re-airing two episodes of Fire Country this Thanksgiving: “My Team” and “Death Trap.” Both episodes are from season 3 and feature a lot of Billy Burke as Vince. “My Team” includes the return of Vince’s ex-girlfriend, while “Death Trap” shows him having a significant conversation with Sharon about Walter’s worsening health.
It’s common for TV networks to re-air old episodes during breaks between seasons. This lets them showcase shows they like and gives viewers who missed episodes a chance to watch them while they wait for new ones. However, the upcoming reruns of Fire Country are unusual because they’re showing episodes from season 3, not the most recent season.
After new episodes of the NCIS franchise finished airing on Tuesday, November 25th, CBS re-aired episodes from NCIS season 23 and a crossover event with NCIS: Origins season 2. The three-hour block concluded with the third episode of NCIS: Origins season 2, which included a guest appearance by a young version of the character Ducky. On November 27th, CBS also re-aired the second episode of the current season of Elsbeth, titled “Doll Day Afternoon.”
It’s interesting to consider whether the choice to re-air these particular episodes of Fire Country season 3 hints at how events will unfold in season 4. With the show currently rebuilding its cast after losing several characters, anything is possible as the story continues.
Can Billy Burke’s Vince Still Return In Fire Country In New Material?
Up until now, Burke hasn’t said anything about leaving Fire Country. He wasn’t the only original cast member to exit in season 4 – Stephanie Arciala, who played Gabriela, also left after the first episode. She’s stated that her departure wasn’t her choice, and the same might be true for Burke. However, while Gabriela’s future is uncertain, Vince’s character definitively died, meaning bringing him back would require a creative solution.
The show could reveal information through flashbacks or visions, and either approach would work at this point. It would be interesting if the mystery of the letter found in Vince’s guitar case triggered flashbacks, which could explain its meaning. That would likely be a more compelling way to resolve the storyline than simply having characters explain it through conversation.
