Ke Huy Quan Calls Short Round Indiana Jones’ Best Sidekick

Ke Huy Quan, known for his roles in films like The Goonies and an Academy Award-winning performance in Everything Everywhere All at Once, is now starring as Gary De’Snake in the upcoming animated movie everyone is excited about.

The sequel to Zootopia arrives in theaters on November 25th. Before the premiere, actor Ke Huy Quan discussed one of his well-known films, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984). When talking about memorable Disney sidekicks, Quan revealed his favorite – and it wasn’t a surprise!

I actually got to be in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom! I was laughing about it because I really love playing Short Round. You know, being Indiana Jones’ sidekick? It was amazing! I just adore that movie. And okay, I might be a little biased, but I honestly think Short Round is Indy’s best sidekick ever.

Ke Huy Quan first gained fame as Short Round in the 1984 film The Temple of Doom, a prequel to Raiders of the Lost Ark set in 1935. He played an 11-year-old taxi driver in Shanghai and was instrumental in saving Indiana Jones from the villain. After finding success as a child actor, Quan stepped away from on-screen roles to work behind the camera. He returned to acting in a big way with the 2022 film Everything Everywhere All at Once, for which he won an Academy Award.

Quan Joins an All-Star Cast in Zootopia 2

Quan lends his voice to the character Gary De’Snake in the new movie, Zootopia 2, alongside the original cast members from Zootopia. The film also stars a talented ensemble including Andy Samberg, Fortune Feimster, David Strathairn, Idris Elba, Shakira, Quinta Brunson, Patrick Warburton, Danny Trejo, Bonnie Hunt, Alan Tudyk, John Leguizamo, Brenda Song, Jean Reno, Macaulay Culkin, and Josh Dallas.

The highly anticipated Zootopia 2 is already receiving excellent reviews, earning a ‘Certified Fresh’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes with a 93% score from 82 critics. Reviewers are calling the sequel, which arrives nine years after the first Zootopia movie, “almost flawless.”

The movie’s humor works on multiple levels – it’s filled with quick, silly slapstick for kids, smart jokes for grown-ups, and tons of puns, even in the names of places (like ‘Gnu Jersey’ and ‘Moleholland Tunnel’) and characters (there’s a caterer named ‘Amoose Bouche’!). The references to other Disney movies feel natural and are genuinely funny – look out for a clever nod to The Mandalorian and a hilarious scene inspired by Ratatouille.

The film’s heart remains strong, with Judy and Nick feeling like real, relatable characters whose journeys feel natural and believable. Judy’s persistent determination to succeed is still central to her personality – she can be a bit overly optimistic or even annoying at times, but Ginnifer Goodwin’s sincere performance keeps her grounded. Jason Bateman’s Nick Wilde continues to be the perfect foil to Judy, his cynical, independent nature balancing out her cheerful and helpful attitude.

Zootopia 2 is currently playing in movie theaters.
