Plex Enforces Remote Play Restrictions on TV

Once the dominance of a single streaming service ended, many studios started their own, and prices have been consistently increasing. Now, Plex is doing the same.

Plex, the popular media platform, is making a big change. While Plex is usually free, it offers a streaming service with ads and lets users upload their DVDs to watch on TV. Now, users will need to subscribe to either a Remote Watch Pass or a Plex Pass to continue streaming their content.

Plex announced upcoming changes starting in late November with the Roku app, and eventually expanding to other apps. To stream content remotely on Roku, users will need to purchase a Remote Watch Pass. This change won’t impact anyone who already has a Plex Pass, or if the server hosting the content is owned by someone with a Plex Pass.

The Remote Watch Pass costs $1.99 monthly or $19.99 annually. A Plex Pass is $6.99 per month, or $69.99 per year. Plex says the Remote Watch Pass is a good option for people who want to stream media from a friend or family member’s server, especially if that friend or family member doesn’t have a Plex Pass themselves.

Plex also announced that the change requiring a Plex Pass for remote streaming will soon apply to all their TV apps – including those for Fire TV, Apple TV, and Android TV – as well as any third-party apps that use the Plex API.

2025 Was Filled With Changes for Plex

Earlier this year, Plex began updating its services. These changes included raising the price of its Plex Pass subscription and restricting free remote streaming through its apps, requiring a direct connection to a user’s server.

Plex announced in March they had big plans for the year, including holding off on price increases. However, they recently explained that rising costs now require a change. As of April 29th, the annual subscription price has increased from $119.99 to $249.99 to ensure Plex Pass continues to improve and support personal media.

They announced that to maintain a high-quality service, they’ll be removing remote playback as a free feature. They need more resources to continue providing a great experience.
