TV Adaptations Don’t Always Please Novelists, But What Does Reacher’s Lee Child Think About Alan Ritchson’s Take?

Book adaptations are often inconsistent in quality, and sometimes the original authors aren’t happy with the results. But Prime Video’s Reacher has been a success story. Recently, as fans anticipate Season 4, Lee Child, the author of the Jack Reacher books, shared why he’s such a fan of the show starring Alan Ritchson.

Lee Child is an executive producer for the TV show Reacher, which first aired in 2022 and is available on Amazon Prime. Each season of the show is based on a different one of his Jack Reacher novels. Unlike many authors who are critical of adaptations of their work, Child actually approves of the Prime Video series. Reflecting on his book series and its various adaptations – including both the TV show and a movie – he recently explained to People why he’s happy with how Reacher turned out.

The story and characters originated with me, but adapting it for television requires the screenwriter to present it in a way that works for a visual audience, which is different than how it’s experienced in a book. I’m very pleased with how it turned out, and I appreciate the skill and creativity that goes into the adaptation process after I’ve finished my part.

Adapting books into TV shows or movies is often challenging because a story’s strengths on the page don’t always translate to the screen, and vice versa. The author’s willingness to accept changes while still being pleased with the final product demonstrates the deep respect and dedication the entire team has for both the original book and the series itself.

It’s great that Lee Child is involved, and he likely has a significant influence on the show. However, as he’s noted, writing the Jack Reacher novels doesn’t make him an authority on everything related to the character, especially since the show is a different medium. Ultimately, he’s thrilled to further explore this character he’s cared about for nearly three decades, and he appreciates that Alan Ritchson, showrunner Nick Santos, and producer Don Granger are all very familiar with the source material, having read the books many times.

It’s amazing how much these fans know about Reacher – they’ve really gone all-out, almost like a group of dedicated fans collaborating to create a Reacher-inspired project because they’re so passionate about it, which is a recipe for success.

Adapting books for the screen is always risky – you never quite know how the final product will be received. Some adaptations are hits, others are criticized for straying too far from the source material, and some just don’t work. But the TV series Reacher seems to be an exception. Author Lee Child’s approval is perhaps the best possible sign that it’s a success.

Alan Ritchson, who plays Reacher, was initially worried that Season 4 wouldn’t be as good as Season 3. However, he now believes it’s their strongest season yet. He’s shared photos of himself with bruises and injuries, suggesting Reacher will face intense challenges and the best fight sequences so far. It promises to be an action-packed season you won’t want to miss!

Fans are hoping to see Season 4 of Reacher in 2026. With Alan Ritchson enthusiastically promoting the new season and Lee Child publicly supporting the show, there’s a lot of anticipation for the continuation of this popular book series adapted for television.
