Mayor of Kingstown Season 4, Episode 5 Review: Taylor Sheridan’s Best Series Right Now

WARNING: SPOILERS ahead for Mayor of Kingstown season 4, episode 5.

In season 4, episode 5 of Mayor of Kingstown, titled “Damned,” the story immediately follows the revelation that Callahan was deliberately positioned near Kyle in solitary confinement. However, Kyle is unexpectedly moved to the general prison population halfway through the episode.

This season of the Taylor Sheridan and Hugh Dillon crime drama on Paramount+ has been exceptional, and the latest episode reinforces that. Mike is beginning to suspect that his problems with the new Anchor Bay warden, Nina Hobbs, and Bunny’s issues with the Colombian cartel aren’t just bad luck—they’re likely a calculated attempt to undermine his power in Kingstown.

Although Kyle is facing jail time, Mike has been increasingly targeted throughout the season. Whether the threat comes from someone above Nina, or from a seemingly friendly face like Frank Moses who’s secretly an enemy, it’s obvious someone is deliberately and aggressively working against Mike.

Season 4 of Mayor of Kingstown stands out from previous seasons – and most other crime dramas currently streaming – because of the consistently high level of tension it maintains throughout each scene. From the very beginning, the show has built a steadily increasing intensity that hasn’t lessened at all in the first five episodes.

You’re constantly on edge watching Mayor of Kingstown because any character could die at any moment – and the show has proven it’s not afraid to kill off major players. This makes it the most intense and captivating series on TV right now.

Mayor Of Kingstown Season 4, Episode 5 Extends The Taylor Sheridan Show’s Hot Streak

Mayor of Kingstown remains consistently gripping, driven by its intense plot, well-developed characters, and sharp writing. The show’s memorable lines, such as Ian’s response to Nina – “Keeps us both in business” – and Mike’s observation that “The only calm I know is before the storm,” add extra impact to an already fascinating and highly engaging story.

I’m totally hooked on Mayor of Kingstown, and it’s not just the snappy writing! The show is brilliant at telling stories visually – seriously, Vince Gilligan would probably love it. They pack so much information into these short, almost fleeting scenes. Like, the moment we see Cortez running the drug operation into Anchor Bay using the same trucks Kevin saw before? It instantly clicked – that’s how he’s connected to Warden Torres and what happened to CO Carney. It’s just so clever!

While Mike has been a compelling lead for three and a half seasons, the fourth season of Mayor of Kingstown really showcases Ian as a central figure. He’s a fascinating character because he can be both funny and charming, yet also deeply flawed and unlikeable. If Evelyn manages to imprison Ian, the show has huge potential – he’d be an incredible, though possibly brief, presence in the prison system.

Mayor Of Kingstown Season 4 Is Putting On A Crime Drama Masterclass Right Now

Dennis P. Mong Jr. / Paramount +

Despite not currently having any planned spinoffs, Mayor of Kingstown has become a sprawling crime drama with a rich cast of characters—many of whom could lead their own series. This is especially notable because, aside from Yellowstone, it’s the only show created by Taylor Sheridan to reach four seasons.

With each new episode, season 4 of Mayor of Kingstown is starting to feel like it’s wrapping things up, which might worry fans since Paramount+ hasn’t announced whether there will be a fifth season. Despite this, the show is currently having a very strong season, and hopefully, this isn’t a sign that it’s coming to an end.

The season 4 finale of Mayor of Kingstown doesn’t fully explain Nina’s motivations, but it clearly demonstrates how ruthless she’s willing to be – she sacrifices Kyle by leaving him vulnerable in general population. Simultaneously, Ian and Robert take matters into their own hands and eliminate a witness who could have landed Ian in prison for life. If that isn’t enough to frighten Evelyn, Mike might be forced to permanently silence her.

Mike has a lot of charm, and it seems to impress Cindy, but Nina powerfully points out in Mayor of Kingstown season 4, episode 5, that she’ll always see him as prisoner #068419.
