WARNING: SPOILERS ahead for Landman season 2, episode 2.
In Landman season 2, episode 2, titled “Sins of the Father,” Cooper Norris faces challenges both in business and in his new relationship with Ariana. The episode begins with Cooper fully trusting Ariana, but this trust quickly leads to a painful setback as his promising oil venture and romance are threatened.
In the season 2 premiere of Landman, Cami made a strong statement to the oil industry, but quickly had to deal with a problem left by Monty. An insurance company issued a court order related to a $420 million settlement M-Tex received to build a new gas well off the Louisiana coast after a previous well exploded. However, neither Rebecca nor Nathan can figure out where the money went.
Throughout the episode, Ainsley and Angela provide some much-needed humor amidst the serious corporate intrigue, though they too eventually find themselves in trouble with the law. With most of the characters remaining static, the focus shifts to Cami and Tommy’s father, TL, as there’s still a lot of potential for development with his storyline.
I’ve been really impressed with Cooper so far. He seems to be growing up, even if his big move was a huge gamble. Still, he keeps messing things up for himself! I’m hoping we see more scenes with him and TL, because it’s becoming clear that whatever issues his dad had are definitely affecting him too. It seems like those patterns are repeating in the Norris family.
A major plot twist in Landman season 2, episode 2 reveals that Sonrisa, the company that funded Cooper’s risky drilling operation with $40 million, is actually run by Esteban Glavez – also known as Gallino, the cartel leader. This connection cleverly links back to the events of season 1’s finale. Following a solid, though somewhat predictable, first episode, Landman season 2 is now fully underway.

Sam Elliott’s character adds a lot to the show. Each scene, and even each line of dialogue, gradually reveals the intense, unspoken tension between the three generations of Norris men. What the characters say – and don’t say – feels important and offers hints about what caused the strained relationship between TL and his son, Tommy.
I initially felt Cooper wasn’t integrated enough into the central storyline of season one, but his independent drive and desire to succeed become clearer once TL’s character is introduced. TL is very set in his ways, similar to Tommy, who at least recognizes his flaws and hopes to be a better father. We’re starting to see a strong contrast between Tommy and TL’s parenting styles – Tommy refuses to physically harm his son, for example – and how Tommy’s own childhood experiences influence the way he tries to guide Cooper.
Tommy and TL have very different memories of their mother, Dorothy, who recently passed away. Despite their disagreements, her death forces them to confront each other, and this conflict promises to be a major focus of season 2 of Landman. While the show centers around the world of oil and business, at its heart, it’s a story about family.
Landman’s Greatest Highs & Lows Continue To Spring From Its Portrayal Of Gender Roles

As a total film and TV buff, I’m really hooked on Landman. Season 2, episode 2 especially shows how powerful this show can be when it dives into the more sensitive sides of being a man, particularly how fathers and sons connect – or don’t. We barely saw much interaction between Cooper and Tommy last season, but these new scenes, along with the ones featuring TL, are really opening things up and making the show feel incredibly promising. It’s offering a really interesting look into these relationships.
However, the show’s female characters feel a little one-dimensional. They’re often depicted as either overly emotional and unpredictable, like Angela and, increasingly, Ariana, or as dramatic and exaggerated, similar to Rebecca. This portrayal is disappointing. Tommy’s old-fashioned views on women and marriage contribute to this, and were a clear trigger for Angela’s outburst at the dinner party in the season 2 premiere when he mentioned her period.
While the show can be fun, it sometimes reduces female characters to simple stereotypes. Ariana’s concerns about Cooper’s wealth feel realistic, and it’s good to see Cooper grow as a person. However, this episode made Ariana seem less strong than she was in the first season, possibly to create a connection between Cooper and Tommy, and that felt like a setback for her character development.
Cami remains a unique and compelling character, standing apart from typical roles in the show. It would be great to see her continue to be a strong negotiator in season 2 of Landman. So far, the new season has been enjoyable, and the series is developing into something more than just entertainment – it’s becoming more artistic and thought-provoking.
