Brendan Fraser Reflects on Missing Out on Playing Superman in J.J. Abrams’ Canceled ‘Superman: Flyby’

Fans were deeply disappointed when the actor’s villainous performance in the cancelled Batgirl movie was never released. This isn’t the first time Brendan Fraser has missed out on a superhero role at Warner Bros., and he recently shared his thoughts on this lost project, adding to the list of ‘what could have been’ moments in his career.

While chatting with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Brendan Fraser discussed his screen test for the unmade Superman movie, Superman: Flyby. Horowitz wondered if Fraser had actually worn a Superman costume during the audition. Fraser confirmed he did, and shared that the project, which was to be directed by Brett Ratner, had very tight security surrounding it.

I really enjoyed that screenplay. They gave me a copy to read, but I had to sign a non-disclosure agreement first. It was a strict NDA – printed in black ink on bright red paper, specifically so it couldn’t be easily copied or taken out of the studio without anyone noticing.

According to Fraser, the script for the movie was very good. He continued:

It was essentially Shakespeare set in outer space, and the script was genuinely excellent. I was up for a role, and I even did a screen test – I actually got to try on the character’s costume!

Brendan Fraser Worried the Effect Playing Superman Would Have on His Career

Someone once famously said, ‘With great power comes great responsibility.’ This idea really hit home for Fraser when he was considered to play Superman. As he described it:

When I reflect on it, I definitely felt some anxiety before taking on a major project. But I also remember thinking that if I succeeded, it would define my career – almost like my legacy would be cemented. It’s not necessarily a negative thing, and I don’t expect it to happen anytime soon, but it does become a core part of who I am professionally – my entire public image.

Looking back, I’m not sure I was prepared for that challenge at the time. I thought I was, because it seemed like a huge opportunity and I was really excited. But honestly, it just wasn’t the right fit, as director Terry George once pointed out – if something isn’t meant for you, you’ll miss out, and that’s exactly what happened in this case.

Though Brendan Fraser didn’t get the Superman role, his career is currently experiencing a major comeback. He recently won an Oscar for his performance in The Whale, appeared in Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, and is now set to reprise his role in a fourth The Mummy film. Missing out on Superman clearly hasn’t harmed his career – in fact, it may have allowed him to become known for more than just that one role.
